This pull request depends on #102, and it contains its commits. Please land #102 first. After that, this pull request's diff shows only its own change. #105 depends on this pull request and contains its commits.

Valgrind never passes all of its own regression tests (make test), and which tests fail depends on the OS, on whether gdb and glibc debuginfo are installed, and sometimes on the CPU. So far, merges have checked these tests by comparing before/after logs by eye. This PR automates that check.

#98–#104 don't depend on this PR. It contains #102 because, without #102, its regtest_ubuntu_26_04 job runs no tests: Ubuntu 26.04's GCC 15 can't compile three of Valgrind's test programs, so make regtest stops before running any test, and check-regtest.sh correctly fails the job.

Changes

  • check-regtest.sh (also make check-regtest) runs make test, extracts the failing tests from the vg_regtest summary, and compares them with regtest-expected/<os>.txt (<os> from /etc/os-release, e.g. ubuntu-26.04, rocky-10).
    • Fails if a test fails that isn't on the list, or if the tests didn't run (no summary line, or a summary reporting 0 tests). It fails in that case even with --report-only.
    • Warns about listed tests that now pass.
    • Each error from the post-test checks (makefile consistency, headers) is its own entry, so a new error can't hide behind an old one.
    • A test whose post: command fails to run, which vg_regtest counts but doesn't list, is an entry TEST (post check failed), such as massif/tests/big-alloc (post check failed).
    • Builds Valgrind's test programs in parallel (make -j check) before running the tests, which vg_regtest runs serially.
    • Skips validating Valgrind's XML manual, which make regtest otherwise does through make check when xmllint is installed; it needs the DocBook DTD and failed in the Rocky Linux container.
    • ? marks a test that may or may not fail; --update regenerates the list (keeping comments and ? lines); --log FILE parses an existing log, and --post-log FILE the matching log of the post-test checks (default: the --log name with .log replaced by -post.log); --expected FILE names the expected-failures file (default regtest-expected/<os>.txt); --observed FILE names the file that receives the observed failures (default regtest-observed-<os>.txt); --report-only never fails.
  • CI: new jobs regtest_ubuntu_26_04 and regtest_rocky_10 log the CPU, the gdb version, and the binutils-dev(el) version (which bfd.h the readelf code uses), build Fjalar, run ./check-regtest.sh --report-only, and upload the observed failures, the logs, and the failing tests' .out and .diff files as an artifact (regtest-results-*).
  • .gitignore: ignores the script's output (regtest-observed-*.txt), the .out and .diff files that vg_regtest leaves behind for each failing test (valgrind/**/*.out, valgrind/**/*.diff*), and 45 test binaries from tests added in the Valgrind 3.23 merge; removes a corrupted line that joined two entries (both are also listed separately).
  • test.sh: the commented-out Valgrind-test command is now ./check-regtest.sh, and the comment says that CI runs it in separate jobs.
  • Plans: plan-upgrade-readelf.md and plan-upgrade-valgrind.md use check-regtest.sh instead of comparing logs by eye. For the upstream baseline (step 3 of the Valgrind plan), they run make regtest and make post-regtest-checks with the same options that check-regtest.sh uses (XMLLINT=xmllint-skipped-by-check-regtest; -s --no-print-directory, so that make's own messages are not read as errors of the post-test checks), and pass --observed, so that the upstream run does not overwrite Fjalar's regtest-observed-<os>.txt. The readelf plan's baseline step also no longer runs make clean first, which fails before the first build. In step 1 of the Valgrind plan, make build precedes ./check-regtest.sh, which needs the build, and deleting untracked files keeps a local regtest-expected/<os>.txt, which step 9 needs. Upgrade plans: preparation plan and review fixes #105 contains the plans' other changes, including the new plan-pre-upgrade.md, which were split out of this pull request.

Follow-up (not in this PR; see plan-pre-upgrade.md in #105)

The regtest jobs only report for now; the expected-failure lists come from these CI runs, not from a developer machine, because results depend on the container.

Before generating the lists, land these, since they change which tests fail:

Then:

  1. Commit each job's regtest-observed-<os>.txt as regtest-expected/<os>.txt; re-run a couple of times and mark any test whose result varies with ?.
  2. Remove --report-only from the two jobs (TODO comments in ci.yml).

Testing

  • Ran check-regtest.sh on the regtest logs quoted in doc/valgrind-merge.texinfo, covering: no expected list, --update, matching results, an unexpected failure, a newly passing test, ? lines kept across --update, and a log with no summary line.
  • Ran it end to end on a Rocky Linux 10 host (build plus 813 tests, about 15 minutes); it parsed the results correctly.
  • Ran it on a constructed log covering two tests whose post: commands fail, post-test-check errors followed by make's and other output, and a --log file that doesn't exist.
  • shellcheck is clean.

Valgrind never passes all of its own regression tests, and which tests
fail depends on the OS, gdb/debuginfo, and sometimes the CPU.
check-regtest.sh runs "make test", extracts the failing tests, and fails
only on a failure not listed in regtest-expected/<os>.txt (or if the
tests did not run). Each error from the post-test checks is its own
entry. "?" marks a test that may or may not fail; --update regenerates
the list.

New CI jobs regtest_ubuntu_26_04 and regtest_rocky_10 run it with
--report-only and upload the observed failures, so that the expected
lists can be bootstrapped from CI; remove --report-only once they are
committed. Also add "make check-regtest".

.gitignore: ignore check-regtest.sh output and 45 test binaries from
tests added in the Valgrind 3.23 merge; remove a corrupted line that
joined two entries (both are also listed separately).
Fix review findings: wrong codespecs#79 example and weak rationale in the ordering
section; bfd.h version mismatch and zstd risks; tarball signature
verification; --merge=diff3 produces conflict markers, not .rej files;
build-product check before generating patches; memcheck files removed
upstream; memcheck/Makefile.am changes; make git-update's memcheck output.

Use check-regtest.sh instead of comparing regtest logs by eye, and depend
on preparatory work (stale upstream files removed, regtest in CI, fixed
make git-update, DynComp IROp scan, bfd.h versions recorded). Add a
check that a merge leaves no file that upstream deleted, and fix the
.gitignore instructions for new test drivers.
The readelf and Valgrind upgrade plans depend on this work: removing stale
upstream files, enforcing regtest expected failures in CI, fixing make
git-update and generate-patch-files.sh, scanning DynComp for unhandled
IROps, updating the merge doc, and recording bfd.h versions.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a script that compares Valgrind regression-test failures with OS-specific expected results. Adds a Make target and report-only CI jobs for Ubuntu 26.04 and Rocky Linux 10. Updates Valgrind test ignore patterns and test-script comments. Revises Binutils and Valgrind upgrade plans to include regression-test baselines, CI results, and additional preparation and validation steps.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 2e261

The checker captures post-check failure diagnostics, and no actionable merge blocker is established. The PR appears ready for normal checks.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 2e261

The new jobs retain the existing read-only repository permissions and checkout safeguards. Regression output is used for reporting and explicitly requested baseline updates, not privileged deployment actions. No material security risk introduced or worsened by this change was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected change expands repository-controlled execution to two additional CI jobs and produces regression artifacts. It does not establish access to a new tenant, production data store, deployment identity, or elevated repository permission.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-selected logs and expected files are processed as text rather than evaluated as shell commands. Update mode deliberately writes the caller-selected expected path under the invoking user's authority. The CI callers supply only report-only mode and do not request that write.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The artifact-consistency limitations affect local result integrity, but the inspected callers do not use those results to grant authority or trigger deployment. No material weakening of an existing security control is established by those limitations.

success behavior unchanged.
- Line 123: Update the required-entry filtering pipeline in check-regtest.sh so

…RF PRs codespecs#89-codespecs#95

Both upgrades should wait for them: codespecs#89, codespecs#90, codespecs#91, and codespecs#95 change dwarf.c
(and codespecs#90/codespecs#95 change mc_main.c and mc_include.h), and codespecs#85-codespecs#88 change
dyncomp_translate.c. codespecs#85's --dyncomp-unhandled-ops=warn and codespecs#87's
explicit unary handling also change how to find unhandled IROps.

"make regtest" runs "make check", which validates the manual with xmllint

- Valgrind plan: build before the baselines, because check-regtest.sh
needs a built tree; save the build log with pipefail.
- Readelf plan: drop "make clean", which fails in a fresh clone before
valgrind/Makefile exists; use pipefail so that a failed build stops.
- 3-way merge: require that "git status --porcelain --ignored valgrind"
prints nothing, because "git add -A -f" adds ignored files.
- Valgrind plan: note that steps 3-6 and 10 still describe patch and
  make git-update until codespecs#99 and codespecs#103 land.
- plan-pre-upgrade.md: codespecs#102 depends on nothing (land it before codespecs#96);
  item 6 is done.
- Readelf plan: record ldd and nm -u output in the baseline, for the
  later comparison.
- Use "land", not "merge", for pull requests.
- Readelf plan: combine the two harvest_* bullets.
- Valgrind plan: say to install gdb and glibc debuginfo before the
regtest baseline commands, not after them.
- Rewrap long lines.

Without -s --no-print-directory, check-regtest.sh reads make's messages in
test-post.log as errors of the post-test checks. Without --observed, the
upstream run overwrites regtest-observed-<os>.txt from step 1.

The text that codespecs#98, codespecs#99, codespecs#101, codespecs#103, and codespecs#113 change in the plans is left
as in codespecs#96, so that those pull requests' versions apply when they land.
plan-pre-upgrade.md points to those pull requests rather than restating
them. The "Alternative: a 3-way merge for Coregrind" section is
removed, because codespecs#103's apply-patch-files.sh performs the same 3-way
merge with git apply --3way.
