feat(data): read GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet a chunk at a time - #1131
The first part of step 2 of #1111: GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet sources can now be read whole a chunk at a time with FeatureSource::visit_chunks, as Shapefile already can (#681). It changes nothing a user sees yet. The next pull request uses it to stream share.exportLayer of a streamed layer from source chunks into a writer per format, so exports no longer hold the whole layer or stop at MAX_LIMIT. Step 3 (a memory budget for load_all instead of the count) builds on it too.
A capability of its own, visits_chunks().streams_chunks() already means more than "can be traversed": the map draws a source whose streams_chunks() is true by walking all of it on every render (SourceLayer::chunk_source), the slow path [Feature]: Layers read in place are read and projected in full twice on every render #1065 measures. Turning it on for these formats would make drawing them slower to make exporting them faster. visits_chunks() says only that visit_chunks works; it defaults to streams_chunks(), so Shapefile keeps both.
GeoPackage scans the table in order, testing the envelope in each geometry's header before decoding, as a read without the R-tree does. It runs the same statement as a read, on a read-only connection of its own: one statement, so one snapshot of the database, in the read's order, and the map's reads of the layer go on while nothing is locked during the visitor. A file put at the path in place of the one opened (another device and inode, on Unix, taken before the database is opened) is refused rather than read as the layer. The browser's GeoPackage reader (GpkgMemSource) scans the same way.
FlatGeobuf (a file or an upload) walks the features in file order, or the index's order for an extent, with the ids a read gives, falling back to file order where the index and the selection disagree, as a read does.
GeoParquet (a file or an upload) goes a row group at a time, skipping row groups and rows by their bounding-box covering as a read does. The taken rows of one row group are decoded together, so the peak is a row group's columns plus a chunk. A row group with more rows than a read takes from one (MAX_GROUP_ROWS), or a geometry column shorter than its rows, is an error, where a read quietly takes the first MAX_GROUP_ROWS: a traversal promises every row.
Sources read by web address aren't traversed: they're read a view at a time, and keep the current whole-read path.
The byte accounting that bounds each chunk moves from the Shapefile provider into a shared Chunker. The Shapefile's zero-budget error now reads "the chunk memory budget is zero", and a source without chunk traversal now answers DataError::Unsupported (it was Format; nothing matches on it).
The visitors repeat each provider's decode loop rather than routing read through a shared sink. Their sampling differs: read skips rows before decoding them. The test below compares every visit with a whole read, so the two can't drift apart unnoticed.
Testing
cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, the workspace tests, layers): passes (2,881 tests).
New test source::tests::geopackage_flatgeobuf_and_geoparquet_visit_what_a_whole_read_gives, for GeoPackage with and without an R-tree, FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet with and without a covering (12 row groups), uploads of all three, and the browser's GeoPackage reader:
the visited rows equal read(Request::all()): ids, attributes and order, at 256, 4,096 and 1 MiB per chunk. Every chunk is within budget unless it holds one row too big for it alone, and the small budgets give several chunks;
with a budget of 1 byte, each row comes alone;
an extent visits the rows a complete read of it gives (in the same order where no index is used), and its summary is complete with matched equal to the rows visited;
an extent with no features visits none;
a visitor's error stops the traversal after one call;
a zero budget is refused before any row;
the source can be read from inside the visitor (the GeoPackage connection isn't held);
a GeoPackage replaced at its path is refused (Unix), and the open source still reads the original;
a GeoParquet row group longer than a read takes from one (the cap lowered for the test) is refused with an error naming it, and passed over when it lies outside the extent;
an unreadable GeoPackage geometry is skipped and counted, and a row without one is left out, as in a read, by both the desktop and the browser reader;
visits_chunks() is true and streams_chunks() false, so drawing is unchanged.
The Shapefile chunk tests pass unchanged on the shared Chunker.
`visit_chunks` for GeoPackage (desktop and the browser's reader), FlatGeobuf and
GeoParquet files and uploads, behind a new `visits_chunks()` capability that,
unlike `streams_chunks()`, leaves drawing alone. The Shapefile's chunk
accounting moves into a shared `Chunker`. The first part of opengeos#1111 step 2:
exports will stream from these chunks.

Walkthrough
Feature sources now support whole-source chunk visitation through a shared byte-budget chunker. Local GeoPackage, in-memory GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet, and Shapefile sources deliver matching features in chunks and report traversal counts. Remote FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet sources do not support chunk visitation.

Local sources scan features and send matches through the chunker. File-backed GeoPackage traversal checks file identity when available. GeoParquet shares row filtering helpers with read and checks selected row groups and columns. Remote FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet sources report chunk visitation as unsupported.

Possible silent row loss in the traversal, which the export will rely on.rows_in (line 230) caps each row group at MAX_GROUP_ROWS (2^24 native, 2^21 on wasm). A row group with more declared rows than the cap has its extra rows dropped without any error, yet this traversal still returns complete: true, and its matched counts only the capped rows. The new trait contract promises the same features as a whole read, and the planned streamed export will treat complete as "nothing left out", so an oversized row group would produce a short export with no warning.
The read path has the same truncation (pre-existing), so this is not a regression for drawing. The fix for the new code is to refuse or mark incomplete when md.row_group(g).num_rows() exceeds self.rows_in(md, g). Confidence: medium (~60%). It depends on whether real GeoParquet files exceed the cap; the files I could inspect don't, and I didn't test one that does.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in d2cc31b: a row group whose declared rows exceed what a read takes from one (MAX_GROUP_ROWS, or fewer when its geometry column holds fewer values) is now an error naming the row group, not a shorter traversal reported complete. read keeps its existing behaviour; the export will use the traversal. The test lowers the cap to 40 on a fixture of 50-row groups (a test-only with_group_rows) and checks the refusal. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass.
I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the read paths that the new visitors have to match (GeoPackage, the browser GeoPackage reader, FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet, Shapefile). I did not compile or run the tests, so the findings below come from reading the code.
Bugs
GeoParquet traversal can silently drop rows of an oversized row group.rows_in caps each row group at MAX_GROUP_ROWS (2^24 native, 2^21 on wasm). visit_chunks still returns complete: true and counts only the capped rows. This is posted inline at parquet.rs:395. The read path already does this, so it is not a regression for drawing, but the export that uses this traversal depends on complete. Confidence: medium (~60%).
Security
None found. The new code adds no unsafe, no unwrap or expect in non-test code, and no new input parsing. The GeoPackage visitor keeps the hardened open_db (read-only, defensive, trusted-schema off).
Performance
GeoParquet visit decodes a whole row group before chunking. The geometry and attribute columns of every taken row are held at once, and the bytes budget does not bound that peak. The PR documents this, so it is a note, not a defect. Confidence: high. Consider stating in the trait doc that the peak is one row group, not the budget.
FlatGeobuf extent visit holds every matching feature number.numbers (8 bytes per match) is not counted against the budget. It is also documented, and the read path does the same. Confidence: high, low severity.
Quality
The read and visit decode loops are duplicated in each provider. The PR explains this choice, and the new test compares every visit with a whole read, so drift would be caught. A reviewer may still want a shared helper later.
The trait default's error variant changed from Format to Unsupported. No caller matches on it, but the PR description does not mention the change.
ParquetSource now has a second impl block for rows_in and covered_rows. This reads fine.
AGENTS.md
No issues found. No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. The new code is below apps/ and uses no std::time or native-only APIs in wasm-compiled files. I did not check the wasm32 build or the ci:windows/ci:macos labels.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 7bf2e20 to PR head 430cada).
Add coverage for row groups that exceed MAX_GROUP_ROWS.
The new visit test writes 50-row groups through write_parquet (tests.rs:90). MAX_GROUP_ROWS (parquet.rs:33) is 2^24 rows native and 2^21 rows wasm, so the test never reaches the cap. A regression that truncates visited groups at the cap would still pass. Covering this needs either an injectable cap or a fixture with millions of rows.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
visit_chunks reopens conn.path() instead of traversing the database file already held by self.conn; if the pathname is replaced after opening, it may visit replacement data using metadata from the original source.
A traversal can return different features from read on the same source, or fail because the replacement has a different schema.
This can occur when: A GeoPackage is atomically replaced at the same pathname while a GpkgSource remains open, before visit_chunks starts.

- GeoParquet: a row group longer than a read takes from one is an error, not a
shorter traversal reported complete.
- GeoPackage: pages of rows by rowid on the source's own connection, read under
its lock and handed over after it, instead of reopening the file by path.
- The trait says what `matched` counts for each provider.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Thanks, both reviews are handled in d2cc31b (cargo xtask ci, 2,881 tests, and the wasm build pass):
GeoParquet row group over the cap (github-actions, CodeRabbit's coverage nitpick): the traversal refuses it with an error. A test-only with_group_rows lowers the cap, so the test covers it with 50-row groups instead of a 16-million-row fixture.
GeoPackage reopened by path (CodeRabbit, unverified): valid, as a file replaced on disk would have been read instead of the open one. The traversal now reads pages of rows by rowid on the source's own connection, each under its lock and handed to the visitor after the lock is released. The map's reads still go on during it; the test reads the source from inside the visitor.
Extent summary (CodeRabbit nitpick): the test now checks that an extent visit's summary is complete with matched equal to the rows visited. It doesn't compare matched/skipped with read's, because a read counts matches before decoding and the GeoPackage R-tree read only sees index hits; the trait doc says so.
Error variant (github-actions): now in the PR description. The row-group peak and FlatGeobuf's id list were already documented there and in the code; the duplicated decode loops are explained in the description too.
Changed since your review of 430cada: the GeoParquet traversal refuses a row group over MAX_GROUP_ROWS; the GeoPackage traversal pages by rowid on the source's own connection instead of reopening the file; the trait doc states what matched counts per provider; tests for the row-group cap and the extent summary.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (medium confidence). For an extent over an indexed FlatGeobuf, numbers holds 8 bytes per matched feature for the whole traversal, regardless of the chunk budget. On a large indexed file with a broad extent, that is an allocation proportional to the layer size, which cuts against the "exports no longer hold the whole layer" goal. The doc comment already says it holds the numbers, so this is a conscious trade-off. If it's acceptable, consider noting in the visit_chunks contract that the id list is unbounded. If not, the ids could be recomputed by walking the index per chunk.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Kept, and now stated in the trait contract too (3186740): "a provider may hold … an index's list of matches (FlatGeobuf, for an extent) besides". The export the next pull request adds reads with no extent, which builds no list; an extent visit holds 8 bytes per match, against about 355 bytes per decoded feature, as a read already does.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (high confidence). A page keeps up to bytes of decoded features in kept, and then chunks buffers up to another bytes before it hands them over. The peak is therefore about 2× the budget, not the budget. The visit_chunks contract says bytes targets owned feature storage, so this overshoot is worth either documenting or fixing. One fix is to halve the page cut (used >= bytes / 2), or to push into chunks as rows are decoded so kept is never needed. The lock would still have to be released before the visitor runs.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 3186740: the GeoPackage traversal no longer reads pages, so there is no page held beside the chunker; it pushes each decoded row straight into the Chunker, whose chunks stay within bytes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance / design (medium confidence). The geometry and every attribute column of a row group are decoded in full before any chunk is handed over. So a traversal's peak is a whole row group, up to MAX_GROUP_ROWS (16.7M rows native, 2.1M rows in wasm), and the bytes budget does not bound it. The visit_chunks doc permits this ("a provider may hold its own unit of the file"), so this is a known trade-off, not a bug. It is still worth stating in the PR. In the browser a GeoParquet with a 2M-row group will now fail export outright, where a read would only sample it. The error is clear, but the user-facing consequence should be known before the export PR lands.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Known and stated in the PR description and the trait doc. On the browser case: it isn't a new refusal in practice. A GeoParquet whose row group has more than 2,097,152 rows has more than the web app's 500,000-feature MAX_LIMIT, which already refuses exporting it today; the streamed export will make the row group the limit there instead of the count.
I read the full diff (8 files, +477/−63) against pr-context/AGENTS.md and the surrounding source. I found no correctness bugs. The Parquet ids match the read path, the GeoPackage column indexing is consistent, and the two callers of visit_chunks are unaffected. The main concerns are about how far the memory budget actually bounds peak memory.
Bugs
None found. Checked: Parquet id numbering against read (both use declared row counts), GeoPackage rowid index (fields.len() + 2 matches the select list), page-cursor advance and termination, Chunker oversized-row handling, and the shp.rs refactor.
Security
None found. The new code takes no new input paths; the GeoPackage SQL uses the existing quote helper.
Performance
GeoPackage page peak is about 2× bytes (high confidence).kept holds up to bytes of features, and Chunker then buffers up to another bytes. Inline comment posted on gpkg.rs:404.
FlatGeobuf extent ids are not budget-bounded (medium).numbers stores 8 bytes per match for the whole traversal. Inline comment posted on fgb.rs:191.
GeoParquet peak is a whole row group, not bytes (medium). The visit_chunks doc permits this, but in wasm a 2M-row group will now fail export outright. Inline comment posted on parquet.rs:433.
AGENTS.md
Compliant on the points I could check: no unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe in non-test code; the test closure's panic! is test-only. DataError::Unsupported exists. No new dependencies. rusqlite is already a dependency of rustgis-data. Nothing below L6 imports egui, and no UI text was added.
The tl!, asset, and ATTRIBUTION rules don't apply to this diff.
Quality (nits, not posted inline)
The Parquet visit_chunks loop duplicates the decode loop in read (parquet.rs ~433–447 against ~358–380). The PR justifies this and the test checks equivalence, but a shared helper for the per-row decode would reduce drift.
Inside the Parquet visitor, and_then(|g| self.reproject.geometry(g)) shadows the row-group g in the same scope (parquet.rs:440). It is harmless, but a rename would help.
DataError::Format in the default visit_chunks became DataError::Unsupported. The only caller propagates with ?, so this is safe.
Confidence: high on the GeoPackage overshoot and on the absence of correctness bugs. Medium on the memory-bound findings, which depend on how the export PR uses the traversal.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base 7bf2e20 to PR head d2cc31b), covering the whole PR.
Count the Feature allocation in the page byte budget.
visit_chunks stops a page when used reaches bytes, but used adds only feature_bytes. For geometry-only point rows that value is 0, so a page can read all PAGE_ROWS (4096) rows before the budget check stops it. Chunker::push also counts size_of::<Feature>(), so the page budget and the chunk budget disagree. Add that size to used.
🐛 Suggested fix
- used = used.saturating_add(super::chunk_memory::feature_bytes(&f));+ used = used.saturating_add(super::chunk_memory::feature_bytes(&f).saturating_add(std::mem::size_of::<Feature>()));

- GeoPackage: one statement on a read-only connection of its own (one
snapshot, the same query and order as a read) instead of pages by rowid,
refusing a file put in place of the one opened (device and inode, on Unix).
- GeoParquet: an oversized row group is refused before anything of it is read,
after a row group outside the extent is passed over.
- Tests compare unindexed extent visits in order; the trait names FlatGeobuf's
list of matches.

Both reviews of d2cc31b are handled in 3186740; cargo xtask ci (2,881 tests) and the wasm build pass. Inline findings have their own replies. The rest:
Page byte accounting and storage-aware order of the whole-read scan (CodeRabbit follow-ups): the GeoPackage traversal no longer pages. It runs the read's own statement on a connection of its own, so there is no page budget to count, and its order is the read's by construction.
Painter order of unindexed extent visits (CodeRabbit nitpick): applied. The test compares unindexed extent visits in order and sorts by id only where an index is used.
Shadowed g in the Parquet visitor (github-actions nit): renamed.
Changed since your review of d2cc31b: the GeoPackage traversal is one statement (the read's) on a read-only connection of its own instead of pages by rowid, refusing a file replaced at its path (device and inode, Unix); the GeoParquet row-group check runs before any column is read; unindexed extent visits are compared in order.

Low confidence, latent contract mismatch.visits_chunks() is hard-wired to true, but visit_chunks returns DataError::Format("GeoPackage: no file to read") when self.file is None (an in-memory connection with an empty path). A caller that checks visits_chunks() first would be told the traversal is available and then fail. Tying the capability to the state it depends on keeps the two in step:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Medium confidence, misleading error.readable is min(rows, geometry column values, group_rows). When the geometry column holds fewer values than the declared row count (a truncated or corrupt file), declared > readable fires and the message says the group is "more than the N read from one". The real cause is a short column, which the check at line ~364 already reports as "columns shorter than its rows". Consider splitting the two cases so the user is told which one occurred, e.g. compare declared with rows for the cap and values for the short column.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in a2b4c28: a row group over the cap says "has N rows, more than the M read from one", and one whose geometry column holds fewer values than its rows says "has columns shorter than its rows", as a read does.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Medium confidence, memory bound. The traversal is described as memory-bounded, but each row group's taken geometry bytes (read_bytes) and every attribute column (read_values) are fully decoded before the first row is chunked. With MAX_GROUP_ROWS at 2^24 rows on desktop, a single large row group holds its entire geometry and attribute payload, far beyond the chunk budget. The PR calls this "a row group's columns plus a chunk", so it's a deliberate trade-off, but the export goal ("no longer hold the whole layer") is only met for files with small row groups. Consider decoding the taken rows in sub-ranges sized from bytes, or documenting the effective bound on the traversal in visit_chunks' doc comment.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Kept for this pull request, and stated in the description and the trait doc ("a provider may hold its own unit of the file (a GeoParquet row group) besides"). Decoding a row group in sub-ranges means keeping each column's reader open across windows; read_column today reads a column through once. The streamed export in the next pull request is where the peak gets measured on real files (RustGIS writes 65,536-row groups; other writers use larger ones), and the sub-range decode goes there if the numbers call for it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Medium confidence, test coverage gap. The unreadable-geometry and null-geometry rows are only inserted into the desktop GeoPackage file and checked against GpkgSource. The browser reader (GpkgMemSource), whose visitor has its own skip path (out.skipped += 1 for a non-blob geometry), and the FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet visitors, get no skipped-row coverage here. Asserting the same (features, skipped) pair for the gpkg_mem source built from the same bytes would close the gap.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added in a2b4c28: the browser reader (GpkgMemSource) of the same file with the unreadable and the geometry-less rows gives the same (features, skipped) as its whole read, (600, 1).
The change is careful and well-tested. I found no crash, correctness or security defects. The four inline comments below are the only items worth acting on. I checked:
The shared Chunker against the old Shapefile loop: oversized rows are still emitted alone, and flush order is preserved.
GeoParquet row numbering against the whole-read path (both use cumulative declared row counts).
GeoPackage visit against read's scan path, including the envelope test and skip/bad accounting.
The default error change from Format to Unsupported: layer.rs:1118 matches only GeoJsonSource::open_path errors, so nothing depends on the old variant.
Upload bytes: Input::Bytes holds a Shared handle, so the per-open clone in FlatGeobuf is cheap.
No unwrap, expect, panic! or indexing in non-test code; panic! appears only in a test closure.
Bugs
visits_chunks() returns true unconditionally on GeoPackage, but visit_chunks errors when there is no file path (in-memory connection). Latent contract mismatch. Low confidence. (gpkg.rs:381)
Performance
Each GeoParquet row group is fully decoded (geometry and every attribute column) before chunking, so the byte budget does not bound memory for that span. With a cap of 2^24 rows on desktop, one large row group can hold far more than the budget. The PR documents this as "a row group's columns plus a chunk", so this is a trade-off, not a defect. Medium confidence. (parquet.rs:438)
Quality
The "more rows than a read takes" error also fires when the geometry column is short, and then reports the wrong cause. Medium confidence. (parquet.rs:427)
Tests
The unreadable-geometry and null-geometry rows are checked only against the desktop GeoPackage reader. The browser reader's skip path and the FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet visitors get no skipped-row coverage. Medium confidence. (tests.rs:1874)
AGENTS.md
No violations found. Icons, strings and layering are unaffected.
Nits (not posted): the duplicated identity check in GpkgSource::visit_chunks could be a small closure; the file field could be a named struct instead of a tuple.

… short Parquet column
- GeoPackage: the file's identity is taken before the database is opened, so a
file swapped in while it opens can't pass for it; `visits_chunks()` is true
only with a file.
- GeoParquet: a row group over the cap and one with a short geometry column
give their own errors.
- Tests: the browser reader's skipped rows; a capped row group outside the
extent is passed over; a chunk is over the budget only for a row alone too big.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The reviews of 3186740 are handled in a2b4c28; cargo xtask ci (2,881 tests) and the wasm build pass. Inline findings have their own replies. The rest:
A capped row group outside the extent (CodeRabbit nitpick): added, with an extent beyond every row group's bounding box (the suggested 1–2° box meets the row group around the prime meridian, so it would be refused, correctly).
Duplicated identity check (github-actions nit): one closure now.
Changed since your review of 3186740: a GeoPackage's identity is taken before the database is opened; visits_chunks() follows whether there is a file; a short GeoParquet geometry column gets its own error; tests for the browser reader's skipped rows, a capped row group outside the extent, and the tighter chunk-budget check.

Doc is wrong about locking (Bugs, ~80% confidence). The scan's SELECT stays open for the whole traversal, so SQLite holds a read transaction across every visitor call. In the default rollback-journal mode that keeps a SHARED lock, so a writer (another app editing the same .gpkg) fails to commit with SQLITE_BUSY until the export finishes. Readers are not blocked, so "the map's reads go on" holds, but "nothing is locked while the visitor runs" does not. Suggest rewording to say that a writer of the file waits for the scan to end.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Right: one open SELECT is one read transaction, so outside WAL mode another program's write to the file waits for the scan to end; only the source's own connection is free. The doc will say so in the next pull request of this stack (the streamed export), which reworks this traversal anyway; this one is approved as it stands.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Misleading error for a deleted file (Bugs, low, ~55% confidence).file_identity returns None when the path can't be stat'ed, so a GeoPackage that was removed (not replaced) fails this check with "the file was replaced since it was added; add it again". Consider returning the I/O error from std::fs::metadata when the file is missing, and keeping the "replaced" message only for a real identity mismatch.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed: a removed file should fail as missing (the I/O error), keeping "replaced" for a real identity mismatch. That goes into the next pull request of this stack with a test, along with the locking wording above.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The chunk budget does not bound a GeoParquet row group (Performance, ~50% confidence).visit_chunks decodes every taken row of a row group (geometry WKB and all attribute values) before chunking it. Native files may hold up to MAX_GROUP_ROWS = 2^24 rows per group, so peak memory can be far above bytes. The doc comment discloses this, but the trait contract says bytes targets owned storage. Consider reading the geometry and attribute columns in row slices sized to the budget, or noting the exception in the FeatureSource::visit_chunks doc.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Stated as an exception in the visit_chunks contract ("a provider may hold its own unit of the file (a GeoParquet row group) besides") and in the description. Decoding in row slices needs each column's reader kept open across slices; the streamed export in the next pull request is where the peak gets measured on real files, and the slices go there if the numbers call for it.
GeoPackage traversal doc claims "nothing is locked while the visitor runs". The scan statement holds a read transaction for the whole traversal, so in rollback-journal mode a concurrent writer gets SQLITE_BUSY until the export ends. Readers are unaffected. (gpkg.rs:389, ~80% confidence)
A removed (not replaced) GeoPackage gets the "was replaced since it was added; add it again" error, because file_identity returns None when the path can't be stat'ed. (gpkg.rs:396, low, ~55%)
Performance
GeoParquet visit_chunks decodes all taken rows of a row group before chunking, so peak memory is not bounded by bytes. Native groups may hold up to 2^24 rows. The doc discloses this, but the trait contract says bytes targets owned storage. (parquet.rs:395, ~50%)
Quality
Nit: GpkgSource.file stores the path exactly as the connection reports it. A relative path would be resolved against the working directory at traversal time, not at open time. (~25%)
Nit: the nested enumerate().filter().enumerate() pattern with (k, (r, _)) in the Parquet visitor is hard to read. A small named helper or a comment would help.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code. The only panic! is in a test closure.
New code uses get() and saturating_* where the file needs them.
file_identity is cfg(unix)-gated, so the wasm build is unaffected.
The shared Chunker keeps the Shapefile behaviour, and the Format → Unsupported default change has no matching callers. The render crate's visit_complete checks only complete.
The new regression test covers the parity, budget, error, and replaced-file cases the PR body lists.
I could not compile or run the tests, since this review has no shell. The findings come from reading the diff and the surrounding source.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 7bf2e20 to PR head a2b4c28).
Add a test for the short geometry column refusal in visit_chunks.
The check at crates/data/src/source/parquet.rs:431-433 refuses a row group whose geometry column holds fewer values than its declared rows. No test in crates/data/src/source/tests.rs reaches this error through visit_chunks. The traversal tests cover the group-row cap and extent skipping only. The current code refuses this case before any row is read, so the gap affects regression coverage, not current output.
A regression test would pin the rule that a traversal does not return a quietly shorter result. Removing the check would leave the length check at parquet.rs:445-447 as the only guard. That check compares against the number of rows taken, not the declared count. A future change could therefore return a shorter traversal without an error. Whether that happens depends on how read_column decodes a short column, which was not inspected.
A fixture with a short geometry column may not be writable through a standard Arrow batch, because batch columns must have equal length. A low-level Parquet writer or edited metadata may be needed. The check at line 445 reports the same message as line 432, so the test should assert the traversal outcome, not only the message.

On the remaining review notes for a2b4c28 (inline ones answered in place):
Short geometry column test (CodeRabbit nitpick): not added. A standard Arrow/Parquet writer refuses a column shorter than its rows, so the fixture would mean hand-editing the Thrift footer, which is brittle for the coverage it buys. The refusal comes before anything is read, and the decoded-length check after it is a second guard.
Relative path (github-actions nit): the path stored is the one SQLite reports for the open database, which is its full pathname, so the working directory at traversal time doesn't matter.
Nested enumerate in the Parquet visitor (github-actions nit): it mirrors read's loop line for line, which keeps the two easy to compare; left as it is.
The two GeoPackage points (locking wording, a removed file) go into the next pull request of this stack, the streamed export, which reworks the same traversal.

Summary
The first part of step 2 of #1111: GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet sources can now be read whole a chunk at a time with
FeatureSource::visit_chunks, as Shapefile already can (#681). It changes nothing a user sees yet. The next pull request uses it to streamshare.exportLayerof a streamed layer from source chunks into a writer per format, so exports no longer hold the whole layer or stop atMAX_LIMIT. Step 3 (a memory budget forload_allinstead of the count) builds on it too.visits_chunks().streams_chunks()already means more than "can be traversed": the map draws a source whosestreams_chunks()is true by walking all of it on every render (SourceLayer::chunk_source), the slow path [Feature]: Layers read in place are read and projected in full twice on every render #1065 measures.
