docs: rework the roadmap; GeoLibre parity and CONTRIBUTING.md in the repo - #747
Conversation
…TRIBUTING.md The roadmap gets goals, an Underway list, releases 0.4-0.9 and an Exploratory list with linked issues and a last-reviewed date. The GeoLibre parity checklist from opengeos#77 moves to GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md, brought up to date, so anyone can tick items in the PR that lands them. CONTRIBUTING.md says what to pick freely and what to coordinate first. Refs opengeos#739

This is great, thanks for pulling it together so fast. A few thoughts:
An earlier draft of goals I'd sketched, take whatever's useful

Thanks for the detailed feedback! Lots of good points here. I agree with updating the Underway criteria and making it clear that the release grouping is still a proposal until @giswqs confirms it. Regarding the "Help test" section, I wonder if a dedicated, pinned issue would be a better approach? That would give contributors a central place to find features needing testing and provide feedback, without having to keep the roadmap updated for every change. We could simply link to it from the roadmap. I also like your suggestions for "Coordinate first" and Would you like to submit a PR against my branch with some of these changes, or would you prefer that I incorporate them myself? |
Themes keep the useful part of the 0.4–0.9 grouping, the dependencies between items, without reading as a release plan or going stale when work lands out of order. GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md and CONTRIBUTING.md now name the theme too. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…geos#671 A rule anyone can check on GitHub lets the weekly review start from the open pull requests instead of memory. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The `.rgis` format, existing command ids and parameters, and the plugin interface are depended on outside the code that changes them. Most pull requests start from an agent reading AGENTS.md, so it now points at the roadmap and the contributing guide. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

It looks good to me. My only suggestion is to remove the version numbers from the heading. With the current pace, those version numbers will be outdated very quickly. Let contributors pick whichever item they want to work on. We can target a weekly release for the next few weeks. |

I merged @Mavrick-F suggestions - these include removing version numbers. I also added #748 and pinned it to the top. |

Underway hands off on an issue or a pull request; GeoLibre's baseline links to its v3.4.0 tag; the ArcGIS token line reads clearly; the COG check says what is unverified; the terrio bullet is wrapped. Drops opengeos#671, which looks abandoned.

Approving. Most of this is @deniial00's; the themes, Underway rule and coordinate-first changes came from my PR, so weigh my review accordingly.
CodeRabbit's three comments are worth taking. For the Underway one, I think it misreads the sentence a little (it's about taking an item that isn't underway yet), but this wording would clear it up and cover items with no issue yet:
to take an item, comment on its issue (or open one) and open a draft pull request early.
Summary
Reworks the roadmap along the lines discussed in #739, so contributors can see where the project is heading, what's already being worked on and where help is useful.
ROADMAP.mdGEOLIBRE_PARITY.md: the GeoLibre v3.4.0 parity checklist, moved from Tracking: feature parity with GeoLibre #77 into the repo so anyone can tick an item in the pull request that lands it. Statuses are updated against the current docs and code, and each planned item names its roadmap theme. Anything not confirmed stays under To verify.CONTRIBUTING.md: how to propose work, which items to pick freely, and which to coordinate first.
