feat(labels): draw labels in an installed font family, by name - #824
Labels can now be drawn in any installed font family, named by family ("Liberation Sans Narrow", "Noto Serif"), as QGIS's text formats name theirs. A label class names its family; labels draw in it on the map and in exports, and bold and italic use the family's own bold and italic faces where it has them.
Missing fonts: the family is saved by name only. A computer without it draws the labels in the label font, and the Labeling pane shows it as "(not installed)". The browser, which reads no installed fonts, does the same. Nothing is bundled.
Finding fonts: the system's font folders (Linux, macOS, Windows, the user's own included) are indexed once, the first time a family is needed. Only each file's name table and the start of OS/2 are read, not whole files: about 0.5 s for 2,000 families here. A face's bytes are read the first time it draws, and kept.
Changes by crate:
render: new families module.
installed/find look a family up by name in any case. A face is listed under both its typographic and legacy family name.
pick chooses the face nearest the asked weight and slope, slanting by hand when the family has no italic.
bytes reads a face once.
The reader is bounded: folder depth and file count, faces per collection, tables, name length, file size, and the total kept. Truncated or hostile files are skipped.
text::Face::family and PlacedLabel::font carry the family. Labels are measured (measure_in, block_width) and drawn in it, with the label font for characters it lacks. Bold in a variable face is drawn at weight 700.
Placement uses the family's widths too: point offsets, Parallel and Curved labels, and a curved label read from its other end.
map:LabelClass::font: Option<String>. It is trimmed and capped at 128 characters when read (a project file is hostile input), none when blank, and not written when unset, so older projects read as before.
engine:labels.style takes "font" ("" goes back to the label font). The new labels.fonts command ({"search"?}) lists the installed families.
ui:
The map view loads a label's family into egui the first time it draws one (labelfonts), using the same face the renderer measured, so a label sits alike on screen and in an export. Until then, and for one frame after the interface fonts are reinstalled, it draws in the interface font.
Labeling pane › Text Symbol gets a Font picker with a search box.
docs:cartography.md › Font.
This is the next step toward opening QGIS projects with their own fonts. swisstopo's SMV25 labels are set in Liberation Sans Narrow, and its point symbols use a font of their own.
Testing
render:
families tests: a folder of fonts indexed by family name, weight and slope, found in any case, bytes read once; the nearest face for each weight and slope; hostile files (truncated, a collection claiming millions of faces, tables and names past the end) skipped.
a_label_is_drawn_in_its_installed_family: Hack as an installed family draws monospaced, parsed once, slanted without an italic face; a family that isn't installed measures as the label font.
map: a_label_font_is_kept_by_name (trimmed, capped, blank is none and not written).
engine: labels_take_a_font_by_family_name (set, drawn where not installed, kept by other changes, cleared, undone; labels.fonts).
ui: the Labeling pane's Font picker is reachable by its label.
Looked at labels in an installed family on screen and in an export, and at the pane's picker (ui_shot).
cargo fmt, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings, cargo test --workspace and cargo xtask layers pass locally, except two font-dependent rustgis-render text tests that fail on main here too. Not built for wasm locally (no target here). The index only uses std::fs, which finds no fonts in the browser.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Choose an installed font family for map labels in the Text Symbol settings. Labels use the selected font when available and fall back to the default label font if it isn’t installed.
Search available font families and set label fonts through commands. Bold and italic label styling is supported with selected fonts.
Clear a selected font to return labels to the default font.
Documentation
Updated the cartography guide with font selection, fallback behavior, and related commands.
A label class can name any installed font family ("Liberation Sans
Narrow"), as QGIS's text formats do. Labels draw in it on the map and in
exports; bold and italic take the family's own faces where it has them.
- render: `families` indexes the system's font folders once, from each
file's name and OS/2 tables (read piecemeal, bounded; hostile files
are skipped), picks the face nearest the asked weight and slope, and
keeps a face's bytes once read. Labels are measured and drawn in it,
with the label font for characters it lacks.
- map: `LabelClass::font`, kept by name (trimmed, at most 128
characters, none when blank): a computer without the family, and the
browser, draw the labels in the label font.
- engine: `labels.style` takes `font` ("" is the label font);
`labels.fonts` lists the installed families.
- ui: the map view loads a label's family into egui when it first
draws it; the Labeling pane's Text Symbol gets a Font picker with a
search box, showing a family that isn't installed as such.
- docs: cartography.md, Font.

MAX_LOADED = 512 MB of leaked (Box::leak) font bytes is a very high ceiling for a comment that says "a few families' worth". Nothing is ever freed, and CJK collections (.ttc) are often 30–48 MB each, so a project that names many families can pin hundreds of MB, and on the web/low-memory machines that is a real risk. Consider a lower cap (e.g. 128 MB), or memory-mapping instead. Also, bytes() holds the global mutex while doing blocking fs::read of up to 48 MB, which stalls any other thread (render workers) needing a face. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in d9caff3. MAX_LOADED is now 128 MB, enough for a few families or two or three CJK collections. bytes() lets go of the lock while it reads a file: it checks the cache and the room left, reads unlocked, then locks again. If another thread kept the same file meanwhile, its copy is used; the budget is checked again before keeping. Memory-mapping would need unsafe (and break on a file changed underneath), so I kept owned bytes.
I read the whole diff and checked Id::unique against the codebase (it's used widely, so it's fine). I did not build the code or run any tests. I found no correctness bugs, but I did find two performance concerns and some smaller quality notes.
The change adds a per-label-class font (an installed family name), a pure-Rust font indexer (families.rs), the labels.fonts command, a font parameter on labels.style, a font picker in the labeling pane, and egui font loading. The hostile-input handling is solid: names are bounded and stripped of control characters, get() is used instead of indexing, table and collection counts are capped, and there are tests for truncated and hostile font files.
Bugs
None found.
Security
None found. Project and font-file input is bounded and sanitized. There is no unsafe, unwrap or panic in non-test code.
Performance
bytes() in crates/render/src/families.rs: the cap on leaked font bytes (MAX_LOADED) is 512 MB, which is high for what its comment calls "a few families' worth". Nothing is ever freed. The function also holds the global mutex during a blocking read of up to 48 MB, so render threads that need another face wait. Confidence: medium.
font() in crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs: families::installed() does the full font-folder walk on first use, on the UI thread. That can freeze the app on machines with many fonts (up to 50k files). The combo box also lowercases every family name every frame and isn't virtualized. Confidence: medium.
Quality
labelfonts.rs and text.rs both hard-code the bold weight of 700 (BOLD_WEIGHT and FAMILY_BOLD_WEIGHT). The two could drift apart, so use one shared constant. Confidence: low.
The heavier = bold && weight < 600 logic is duplicated in text.rs and labelfonts.rs. The UI and the export must agree on it, so move it into families. Confidence: low.
text_shown in mapview.rs passes None for the family, which is correct for text graphics. A named parameter or a comment would make that clearer than a bare None. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
The new interface strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, as required.
The change keeps the layering. families.rs is in the render crate, and the UI only reads it.
The change is wasm-safe if std::fs use in families.rs is gated for the browser. The module header says the browser has no installed families, but I did not confirm that installed() returns an empty list on wasm32. font_dirs() and walk() would simply find nothing there, so I expect it is harmless. Confidence: low.
New dependency use: tempfile and epaint_default_fonts appear in tests only. Please confirm they are dev-dependencies of the render crate.
Nothing in the diff updates ATTRIBUTION.md or THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt, so I assume no assets or dependencies were added. The hostile_params_never_panic test should cover the new labels.fonts and font parameters. Please confirm it does.

…out holding the lock, and kept within 128 MB
- families::warm_up indexes the font folders on a thread of their own when the app starts; the label pane and map view read installed_now and never wait for the walk.
- A face's file is read with the lock let go, and at most 128 MB of faces is kept (was 512).
- Label fonts aren't set in a frame that set the interface fonts, which they would undo.
- The bold weight and the heavier-than-the-face rule are in families, shared by the map view and the export.
Font indexing on the UI thread:families::warm_up() now walks the font folders on a thread of its own, started when the app starts. The label pane and the map view read families::installed_now() and never wait. Until the index is ready, the pane shows a disabled "Reading the installed fonts…" button.
Lowercasing every frame: the picker only lowercases names while there is search text.
MAX_LOADED and the lock: see the inline thread.
Duplicated bold weight and "heavier" rule: both moved into families (BOLD_WEIGHT, heavier()), and the map view and the export both use them. A unit test covers the rule.
Combo box virtualization: left as is. The list only exists while the combo box is open, and only listed (typographic) families are shown.
wasm:installed() finds no folders in the browser, and warm_up indexes at once there instead of spawning.
Dependencies:tempfile is a dev-dependency of the render crate. epaint_default_fonts was already a regular dependency before this PR, which doesn't touch Cargo.toml.
hostile_params_never_panic: it runs every command, labels.fonts and labels.style included, against its junk table, which has a font key.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The global PARSED mutex is held across families::bytes(installed), which can read a file of up to 48 MB from disk. Every other thread measuring or drawing text waits on that lock, including text in the default font. families::bytes deliberately releases its own lock around the read, and this wrapper undoes that. Drop the guard before calling bytes/parse, then re-lock to insert and keep the first winner. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 79cf902. family_font now checks PARSED and lets the lock go, reads and parses the face unlocked, then locks again to insert. If another thread kept the same face meanwhile, its face is used. Other text is no longer held up by a face being read.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
measure_in skips the measure cache for named or serif faces and shapes the text on every call. block_width runs per feature per class during placement, so a layer with many labels in a named font reshapes each string every frame. Consider caching on (text, size, face) as measure does. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 79cf902. measure_in now goes through the same bounded, sharded width cache as measure, keyed by the whole face (bold, italic, serif, family). widths::Cache is generic over that style key, and the label font keeps its bool key, so its existing tests are unchanged.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
families::find calls installed(), which blocks on the OnceLock until the folder walk finishes (tens of thousands of files on some machines). If a project names a font and rendering runs before the font-index thread is done, the render waits for the whole index. The same applies to labels.fonts. If this runs on a UI-driving thread it is a first-frame stall. Consider using installed_now() and drawing in the label font, with a repaint, until the index is ready. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 79cf902. The renderer resolves a class's font with families::find_ready. In the app, which starts warm_up and draws the map on its UI thread, it returns None until the index is done, so the label draws in the label font for a moment instead of the frame waiting. A frame then asks for repaints, and once installed_now() has the index it invalidates the map, so it is drawn again in the named family. Where nothing warmed up (scripts, the command line, exports run headless), find_ready indexes at once, so an export always draws in the named family.
labels.fonts stays blocking on purpose. It is a command that answers with the installed families, so it has to wait for them; the label pane doesn't call it, it reads installed_now().
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
With no search text the combo lays out one selectable_label per listed family (often 1,000 or more) and lowercases every name each frame while open. Use ScrollArea::show_rows, or cap the rows shown until the user types. Minor perf. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 79cf902; this repeats a note from the first review, which I had left as is. The list now shows at most 200 families (MAX_FONTS_SHOWN), followed by "N more: type part of a name". Typing narrows it as before. Names are lowercased only while there is search text, so with no search nothing is lowercased, and at most 200 rows are laid out a frame. I used a cap rather than show_rows because the combo box's popup already has its own scroll area.
I read the whole diff and the surrounding code in mapview.rs. I found no correctness bugs or security problems. The findings are performance and quality concerns. I did not build the code or run any tests. I posted four inline comments.
Bugs
None confirmed. Things I checked:
the font-file parsing for hostile input
the bounds on collection sizes, name length and file size
serde trimming of font names
how labels.style handles font, including blank values and undo
fsSelection and OS/2 offsets
Security
None found. Font files are read piecemeal with size and count limits, and the traversal is bounded in depth and file count. Names are cleaned of control characters and capped at 128 characters. Project-file input goes through de_font.
Performance
crates/render/src/text.rs:100 (medium):family_font keeps the global PARSED mutex locked while families::bytes reads a font file of up to 48 MB. That stalls all text measurement on other threads, which undoes the point of bytes releasing its own lock during the read.
crates/render/src/text.rs:251 (medium):measure_in skips the measure cache for named-family and serif faces and shapes the text on every call. block_width runs per feature per class, so large labelled layers reshape every string each frame.
crates/render/src/lib.rs:3113 (low-medium):families::find calls installed(), which blocks until the font index is built. A project that names a font can stall its first render, or the labels.fonts command, while the font-index thread is still walking. installed_now() with a repaint would avoid that.
crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs:246 (medium): The font combo draws every listed family, often 1,000 or more, and lowercases each name every frame while open. show_rows or a row cap would fix it.
Minor, no inline comment (low):labelfonts::family runs per glyph and per ink pass for curved labels. Each call allocates a key with format! and does a fonts lookup. Cache the key, or build it once per label.
Quality
None beyond the above. The new code follows the repository's rules: no unwraps, translatable strings, and no third-party assets. The tests are good: hostile font files, nearest-face picking, the project round-trip and the engine command.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. New UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, and the new code has no unsafe, unwrap or panic outside tests. The Box::leak calls are bounded by MAX_LOADED, but the PARSED cache of leaked FontRefs is not counted against that budget. It is small, so this is only a note.
The change adds no dependencies. I could not check whether tempfile and epaint_default_fonts are already dev-dependencies of the render crate.

…, widths cached, at most 200 fonts listed
- family_font reads and parses a face with the PARSED lock let go, keeping the first winner.
- measure_in caches named-family and serif widths as measure does, keyed by the whole face.
- Drawing finds a family with families::find_ready: in the app, while the index runs, a label draws in the label font and the map is drawn again once it is done; scripts index at once.
- The font list shows at most 200 families; the rest are found by typing.
- A collection's file is kept by path and each face checked on its own, so a damaged face doesn't hide its siblings.
Second review, fixed in 79cf902 (details in the inline threads): face reads no longer block on the PARSED lock, named-face widths are cached, drawing never waits for the font index in the app, the font list is capped at 200, and CodeRabbit's TTC finding is fixed.
The minor note without a thread, labelfonts::family building a format! key per glyph for curved labels: left as is. It runs once per character drawn, and curved labels are capped at 200 characters. The key is a short string compared against egui's own map, which the drawing itself does per glyph anyway.
On PARSED not being counted against MAX_LOADED: those are small FontRef structs (borrowing the counted bytes), one per face and weight drawn, so they stay small as you say.

walk caps files (MAX_FILES) and depth, but not the number of directories visited. path.is_dir() follows symlinks, so a few symlink cycles in a font folder fan out up to MAX_DEPTH levels, and each level multiplies the work. This runs at startup, and again on first use in the CLI. Consider skipping symlinked directories (e.file_type() without following links) or capping the directory count. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 44b2d77. walk keeps the real path (canonicalize) of every folder it has walked, at most MAX_DIRS (20,000) of them, and doesn't walk one again. A link back up the tree, or two links to one folder, therefore add nothing twice, and a cycle stops at once instead of fanning out to MAX_DEPTH. Links to folders elsewhere are still followed, since font folders are often linked in. The new test a_folder_is_walked_once_however_many_links_reach_it (Unix) puts four links back to the folder beside a font and checks one folder walked and one font found.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
de_font calls Option::<String>::deserialize, so a project whose font is not a string (a number, say) fails to deserialize the whole LabelClass, and probably the project with it. The PR calls project files hostile input and the repo says never to crash, so a lenient read would fit better: deserialize a serde_json::Value and keep only strings. Confidence: low-medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 44b2d77. de_font now reads either a string or anything else (IgnoredAny). Anything that isn't a name reads as no font (the label font), so the class and the project still read. a_label_font_is_kept_by_name now also feeds 7, ["Arial"] and {"a": 1} and checks the labels read with no font.
The feature is well structured. A font family is stored by name on the label class, and indexing reads font files piecemeal with limits on file count, depth and sizes. Rendering falls back to the label font when a family is missing. Tests cover hostile font files, face picking and the command. I found no crashes or correctness bugs, only some robustness and design concerns. I didn't compile or run anything.
Bugs
None confirmed.
crates/map/src/symbology.rs (~1297): de_font calls Option::<String>::deserialize. The PR treats project files as hostile input, so a lenient read that keeps only strings would fit better. Confidence: low-medium. (Inline comment posted.)
Security / robustness
crates/render/src/families.rs (walk, ~401): the walk caps files and depth but not directories visited. is_dir() follows symlinks, so symlink cycles in a font folder can fan out to depth 8 and run for a long time. Skipping symlinked directories or capping the directory count would help. Confidence: low-medium. (Inline comment posted.)
Memory: families::bytes and family_font deliberately leak up to 128 MB of font bytes plus parsed faces. This is bounded and documented, and I think it's acceptable. A user who flips through many large CJK families gets nothing back until restart.
Performance
crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs (labels.fonts, ~12): the command uses the blocking families::installed(). If run from the UI or a script while warm_up is still indexing, it waits for the whole folder walk. Using installed_now() and reporting "still indexing" would avoid the stall. Confidence: low.
crates/render/src/families.rs (face_info, ~458): an unreadable OS/2 table drops the whole face (?). Falling back to weight 400 and selection 0, as the missing-table arm does, would keep more fonts usable. Confidence: low.
Each newly requested label font calls ctx.set_fonts, which rebuilds egui's font atlas. That's fine for a few fonts, but many distinct families or faces on one map cause repeated rebuilds. A reinstall of the interface fonts also drops them and triggers the same cycle. Confidence: low.
Quality
render_frame indexes class_fonts by position in labels.in_order() and reads it with ci from classes.classes_of(...). This is correct only while LabelMatcher indexes classes in the same order, with Default last. I didn't find the invariant asserted. A short comment or a test would protect it. Confidence: low.
measure_in falls back to chars * size * 0.6 when no face is available. This is only reachable with no fonts at all, so it's harmless. Confidence: low.
The label font picker, labelfonts.rs and families.rs look consistent with the surrounding code, and the user-visible strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
AGENTS.md
I found no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code. The new families module is gated for wasm, and std::time isn't used in render. In ui-egui the new code uses std::time::Duration, which is only a duration type.
I saw no new dependency in the diff, but tempfile and epaint_default_fonts are used in render tests. Please confirm both are dev-dependencies of rustgis-render and are allowed by deny.toml.
A regression test for the hostile-input path exists (hostile_font_files_are_skipped). hostile_params_never_panic should cover labels.fonts and font automatically, since both are registered commands.

…, and a font that isn't a name is dropped
- An export (full-resolution render) resolves label fonts with families::find; frames on screen keep find_ready.
- The font-folder walk keeps the real paths of the folders it walked (at most 20,000), so links back up the tree add nothing twice.
- A label class's font that isn't a string reads as none instead of failing the project.
Third review, fixed in 44b2d77: the folder walk visits each folder once and caps their number, a font that isn't a string reads as none, and (CodeRabbit) exports wait for the font index. Details are in the inline threads.
The other notes, left as they are:
labels.fonts blocking: answered on the earlier thread. It's a command that answers with the installed families, so it waits for them, and the UI doesn't call it.
An unreadable OS/2 table drops the face: a face whose OS/2 can't be read is damaged, and is skipped like other damaged faces. A face with no OS/2 at all still reads as weight 400.
set_fonts per new label font: it's called once a frame at most, for all fonts asked for that frame (install_pending sets them in one go), and only for fonts a map uses.
class_fonts order:LabelMatcher::new builds its classes from labels.in_order(), and classes_of is documented to answer each class's place in it, so the two can't differ.
Leaked bytes until restart: as you say, bounded by MAX_LOADED and documented.
Dependencies:tempfile is a dev-dependency of rustgis-render, and epaint_default_fonts was a regular one before this PR, which doesn't touch Cargo.toml or deny.toml.

full_res_rasters is being used to mean "this is an export, so wait for the font index". That coupling is implicit. If another caller passes full_res_rasters = true on the UI thread, such as a print or layout preview, it blocks on the folder walk, which can take a long time on a machine with tens of thousands of font files. If a caller passes false for an export-like render, labels silently draw in the label font. Consider a named parameter or a comment on render_frame's contract. Confidence: medium-low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fair, fixed in 9e51082 by writing the contract down rather than adding a second flag. render_frame's doc now says that full_res_rasters marks an export, which draws everything as it will stay: rasters at full resolution, and labels in their installed families, waiting for the index (families::find). A frame on screen passes false and never waits (families::find_ready). The two belong together: only render_complete (exports) passes true. A preview that wants full-resolution rasters is an export in that sense, and should also draw the families it will print.

labels.fonts calls families::installed(), which blocks on the OnceLock if the background font-index thread is still walking. Commands run on the UI thread in the app, so calling this from the command palette or an assistant tool right after startup freezes the UI until the index finishes. The panes avoid this with installed_now(). Consider returning an empty list (or an "indexing" flag) when the index isn't ready and warming has started. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 9e51082. I had kept this blocking in the earlier replies, but commands do run on the UI thread in the app. labels.fonts now uses families::available(), which find_ready uses too. While the app's warm_up index is still running, it answers {"fonts": [], "indexing": true} at once, and asking again later lists them. Where nothing warmed up (scripts, the command line, the engine tests), the families are indexed on the spot, as before. The params string documents indexing.

The ? on table.get(...) in the record loop returns None for the whole name when one record is truncated, discarding a valid best already found. Using let Some(rec) = ... else { break } would keep the earlier match. Low severity, because it only affects slightly damaged fonts. Related: bytes() caches None per path forever, including when the None came from a transient read error or from the memory budget being full at that moment. Confidence: low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 9e51082. A record that runs past the table ends the loop (let … else { break }), so a match found before the cut is kept. The new test a_name_table_cut_short_keeps_the_names_before_the_cut lists two records and cuts the second off; the first's family name still reads. The old ? returned None there.
On bytes() caching None for good: a None from the budget stays right, because kept bytes are never freed, so the budget can't come back. A read error on a font the index has just read is rare enough not to retry.
The PR adds an installed-font-family picker for label classes. It covers the labels.stylefont parameter, labels.fonts, a font index in families.rs, rendering in render, and egui loading in labelfonts.rs. I read the whole diff (pr-context/diff.patch) and checked it against the surrounding files. I did not build the PR or run its tests. The design is careful about hostile input: sizes and recursion are bounded, get() is used throughout, symlink loops are handled, and the project-file deserializer tolerates junk. I found no crashes or security problems. The findings below are minor.
Bugs
Medium-low:render_frame (crates/render/src/lib.rs) uses full_res_rasters to decide between families::find (blocks on the font index) and find_ready (non-blocking). That coupling is implicit. A UI-thread caller that passes true would freeze on the folder walk, and an export-like caller that passes false would silently get the label font.
Low: In families::name (crates/render/src/families.rs), ? on table.get(...) inside the record loop aborts the whole name lookup on one truncated record. That throws away a valid match found earlier. break would keep it.
Low:families::bytes caches None per path permanently, including after a transient read error or when the memory budget was full at that moment.
Performance
Medium: The labels.fonts command (crates/engine/src/cmd/labels.rs) calls families::installed(), which blocks on the OnceLock while the font-index thread is still walking. Commands run on the UI thread, so calling it soon after startup can freeze the UI. The panes already avoid this by using installed_now().
Security
Nothing found. Font files, project JSON and command parameters are all bounded and parsed defensively.
Quality
Nit:de_font in crates/map/src/symbology.rs has two stacked doc comments that say the same thing.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or unsafe in non-test code, and the new text goes through tl! and i18n::fmt.
The new command has a params string and a regression test, and the hostile-input paths are tested.
No new dependencies or asset files that would need ATTRIBUTION.md or deny.toml changes.

When an installed family contains only italic faces, families::pick falls through from best(false) to best(true) and returns that italic face with slanted == false. Upright labels then render in an italic face in both the renderer and UI.

…name table keeps its names, and the export contract is written down
- labels.fonts answers {fonts: [], indexing: true} while the app is still indexing (families::available, shared with find_ready).
- A name table cut short keeps the records before the cut.
- render_frame's doc says full_res_rasters marks an export, which waits for the font index.
- de_font has one doc comment.
@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on crates/render/src/families.rs:126-137 (an italic face for an upright request): I'm keeping the fallback, on purpose. A family installed with only italic faces is what the user named, and drawing it in that face is how font matching works elsewhere. CSS's matching algorithm says that for font-style: normal, "normal faces are checked first, then oblique faces, then italic faces", and Qt (QGIS's text) picks the nearest face of the family the same way. Answering None would draw the labels in the label font instead, which loses the family the project asked for. slanted stays false, so no synthetic slant is added on top of the italic face.

Low confidence nit: read_at(...)? here drops the whole face when the OS/2 table is cut short or past the end of the file, even though the name table already read fine. The unwrap_or(400) fallbacks just below suggest the intent is to degrade gracefully. Falling back to (400, 0) would keep the family listed:
Related, also low confidence: index keys are name.to_lowercase() (str-level, handles final-sigma context), but find_in and the sort use cmp_names, which lowercases per char. For names containing a capital sigma the two can disagree, so binary_search could miss a family. Using cmp_names consistently for the key would avoid it.
I read the diff and the surrounding code, but I did not build the PR or run its tests. The change adds per-label-class fonts: LabelClass::font, the labels.fonts command, a font parameter on labels.style, a font index in render::families, and a font picker in the label pane. It follows the repo's rules well. I found no panics, unsafe, or unbounded input, and the new get()/bounded-read code and hostile-input tests are good. Nothing blocking.
Bugs
Dropped faces (low confidence).face_info in crates/render/src/families.rs (line 488) uses read_at(...)? for OS/2. A truncated OS/2 table drops the whole face, even though the name table read fine. Falling back to (400, 0) would keep it. Inline comment posted with a suggestion.
Name matching (low confidence). The index key uses str::to_lowercase, but sorting and binary_search use cmp_names, which lowercases per character. They can disagree for names containing a capital sigma, so a family could be missed. Mentioned in the same inline comment.
Security
None found. Font files and names from disk and project JSON are bounded in size and count: 128 characters per name, 48 MB per file, 128 MB kept in total, and capped folder depth and counts. Symlink loops are handled.
Performance
Nothing blocking. Kept font bytes are leaked on purpose and capped at 128 MB, as the comments say. Indexing runs on its own thread, and the UI and labels.fonts don't wait for it.
Quality
Nothing to raise. The shared widths::Cache<S> generalisation and the single families::heavier rule keep the map view and the export in agreement.
AGENTS.md
Interface text is wrapped in tl! and i18n::fmt, there is no third-party asset, and the new labels.fonts command is covered by tests. I did not check that hostile_params_never_panic exercises labels.fonts with junk parameters. It would be worth confirming, since AGENTS.md requires it.

Summary
Labels can now be drawn in any installed font family, named by family ("Liberation Sans Narrow", "Noto Serif"), as QGIS's text formats name theirs. A label class names its family; labels draw in it on the map and in exports, and bold and italic use the family's own bold and italic faces where it has them.
nametable and the start ofOS/2are read, not whole files: about 0.5 s for 2,000 families here. A face's bytes are read the first time it draws, and kept.Changes by crate:
familiesmodule.installed/findlook a family up by name in any case. A face is listed under both its typographic and legacy family name.pickchooses the face nearest the asked weight and slope, slanting by hand when the family has no italic.bytesreads a face once.text::Face::familyandPlacedLabel::fontcarry the family. Labels are measured (measure_in,block_width) and drawn in it, with the label font for characters it lacks. Bold in a variable face is drawn at weight 700.LabelClass::font: Option<String>. It is trimmed and capped at 128 characters when read (a project file is hostile input), none when blank, and not written when unset, so older projects read as before.labels.styletakes"font"(""goes back to the label font). The newlabels.fontscommand ({"search"?}) lists the installed families.labelfonts), using the same face the renderer measured, so a label sits alike on screen and in an export. Until then, and for one frame after the interface fonts are reinstalled, it draws in the interface font.cartography.md› Font. This is the next step toward opening QGIS projects with their own fonts. swisstopo's SMV25 labels are set in Liberation Sans Narrow, and its point symbols use a font of their own.
