feat(map): open QGIS projects as maps and apply QGIS layer styles - #825
RustGIS can now open a QGIS project (.qgs or .qgz) as a map, and apply a QGIS layer style (.qml) to a layer. It works for any project, and lists what it couldn't carry over exactly.
Opening a project (project.importQgis {"path" | "text" | "data", "dir"?}) creates a new map of the current project, as one undo step:
Layers: in QGIS's layer-tree order, each from its file (relative paths from the project's folder), a CSV of points, XYZ tiles or a WMS/WFS service. Unchecked layers and groups come in hidden.
The map: it takes the project's coordinate system and saved view (or the layers' extent when that view shows none of them), with no basemap and no graticule.
Filters and label clauses are checked against each layer's data before they are set.
Each layer keeps its look where RustGIS can draw it:
Renderers: single symbol; categorized (as Unique Values, merged values each a class, the "all other values" category the rest); graduated; rule-based where every rule picks values of one field (an else rule the rest). A wrapper renderer (point cluster, displacement…) is drawn by the one inside.
Symbols: simple fills, lines and markers with their colours, widths in any unit, offsets, caps, joins and opacity. A line's simple lines become stacked strokes, its rendering passes their levels when the renderer uses symbol levels.
Labels: simple and rule-based, each rule a label class whose SQL clause is its filter and its parents'. An else rule takes none of its siblings. Each class keeps its field, size (in any unit), colour, bold and italic, buffer as a halo, placement (Parallel and Curved along lines, around and over points) and scale range.
Expressions: carried over where they are SQL: fields compared with values, LIKE, IN, IS NULL, joined by AND, OR and NOT. Anything else is refused and noted, not guessed.
The report: the command returns notes, layer by layer, of what was approximated and what was skipped.
Approximated: pattern fills as a tint of their colour, font and SVG markers as circles, dashed lines solid, other fonts in the label font.
Hostile input: project files are treated as hostile.
A plain <!DOCTYPE> is skipped; one with an internal subset (entity tricks) is refused.
The document is capped at 5 M nodes and a renderer at 4,096 classes.
A PostGIS source's password is never kept.
A layer style (style.importQgis) applies a .qml's renderer, strokes, labels and layer settings to the selected layer.
Changes by crate:
map: new qgis module: read_project, read_style, Style::apply, Report. Sources, expressions (to_sql), symbols, renderers and labels each have a file of their own. palette.rs uses its property and colour readers.
engine:cmd/qgis.rs: project.importQgis and style.importQgis. Session::run_part runs commands inside one, so the import undoes in one step.
ui:
Desktop Open accepts .qgs/.qgz, and ui.openItem has qgisProject/qgisStyle kinds.
Backstage has a QGIS Project… card.
The Symbology pane has an Import QGIS Style… button.
docs:workspace.md › QGIS projects and styles; comparison/qgis.md.
No new dependency (roxmltree was already used for QGIS colour ramps).
I tested it against swisstopo's SMV25 project (66 layers, 27 annotation layers, 281-class road renderer, symbol levels): it opens in about 5 s. Against QGIS's own rendering of the same views, 7.5% (old town) and 11.7% (overview) of pixels differ visibly. Most of that is font markers, pattern fills and marker lines, which the report lists.
Testing
mapqgis tests:
a_project_reads_into_layers_in_tree_order_with_their_styles: layers, sources, CRS and view, renderers, symbols and levels, rule-based labels with an else rule, the report.
hostile_files_are_refused_or_bounded: not XML, an entity-expansion DOCTYPE, rules nested 200 deep, NaN values, one note repeated 10,000 times kept once and counted.
engine: a_qgis_project_opens_as_a_map_and_a_qgis_style_styles_a_layer (layers added bottom-first, view, one undo step, notes, a style applied to a layer).
Opened SMV25 in the app and compared it with QGIS 4.2's rendering of four views.
cargo fmt, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings, cargo test --workspace and cargo xtask layers pass locally, except two font-dependent rustgis-render text tests that fail on main here too. Not built for wasm locally (no target here). The import reads from text or bytes, so the web app can pass a file's contents.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Open QGIS .qgs and .qgz projects as new maps, preserving supported layers, their order and visibility, coordinate systems, applicable map views, and styling.
Import .qml styles onto selected layers, including supported symbols, renderers, labels, and settings.
Start QGIS imports from the project picker, command search, or Symbology pane.
Import notes identify features that were approximated or skipped. QGIS files are not modified.
Documentation
Added guidance on importing QGIS projects and styles, including supported settings and known limitations.
`project.importQgis` opens a QGIS project (.qgs, or a .qgz archive) as a
new map: its layers in the layer tree's order, from their files (relative
paths from the project's folder), CSV points, XYZ tiles or WMS, hidden
where unchecked; the project's coordinate system and saved view (its
layers' extent when that shows none of them); a blank basemap and no
graticule. `style.importQgis` gives a layer a .qml style. One undo step
each (`Session::run_part` runs the commands an import is made of).
What carries over (`rustgis_map::qgis`, reading both the <Option> and
the older <prop> settings): single, categorized, graduated and
rule-based renderers (rules on one field's values as Unique Values, an
else rule the rest; wrapping renderers by the one inside); simple fills,
lines and markers, units, symbol opacity, a line's simple lines as
stacked strokes with their passes as levels; opacity, blending, scale
ranges, filters as definition queries, reference scales; simple and
rule-based labels as label classes (filters as SQL clauses, an else
rule's from its siblings', placement, size, colour, bold, italic, halo,
scale range). QGIS's scales are taken at RustGIS's 0.28 mm pixel.
The rest is drawn as near as it can be or left out, and the import's
notes say so layer by layer (pattern fills as a tint, font and SVG
markers as circles, dashes solid, marker lines, data-defined settings,
raster colouring, PostGIS and WFS sources). The XML is read with a node
limit and no entity declarations; a database password never reaches the
notes.

RustGIS now imports QGIS .qgs and .qgz projects as maps and applies .qml styles to selected layers. The importer converts supported sources and map settings, records skipped or approximated content, and adds desktop entry points for both workflows.

The WMS (and XYZ) branches return before the visibility, opacity and scale range are applied. A hidden or semi-transparent WMS layer is added fully visible, and no note says so. The XYZ branch notes the hidden case, but the WMS branch doesn't. The PR promises "nothing is left out without a note". Either apply layer.visible, transparency and the scale range to the layer these commands add, or add a note here as the XYZ branch does. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 8f8eed6 (CodeRabbit's 4367543712 is the same finding). The WMS and XYZ branches now hand what service.add / map.addTiles answered to tile_settings. It takes the tile layer at the returned index and gives it the QGIS layer's visibility and opacity (transparency 0–100 → opacity 1–0). Tile layers have no scale range, so a range set in QGIS is noted ("its scale range: a web layer draws at every scale"). If the index can't be found, a hidden or transparent layer is noted rather than silently added shown. a_qgis_project_opens_as_a_map_and_a_qgis_style_styles_a_layer now imports an unchecked XYZ layer with opacity 0.25 and a scale range and checks all three.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Project files are hostile input, but the ogr/gdal and delimitedtext paths, and any value containing ://, go straight to layer.addData (source.rs::absolute keeps absolute paths and URLs as they are). Opening a downloaded .qgs can therefore read arbitrary local files or fetch arbitrary URLs, including GDAL /vsicurl/-style paths, without the user seeing them first. Consider these changes:
Restrict automatic loading to paths under dir or to the user's own files.
List the external URLs and absolute paths in the report.
Confirm the same file and network gating that the assistant and plugin paths apply to layer.addData.
project.importQgis is also missing from the NEVER list in plugins.rs, and I couldn't find where the assistant gates it. Confidence: low to medium; I couldn't confirm the gating.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Partly valid, fixed in 8f8eed6. project.importQgis is now in plugins::NEVER, so plugins can't run it and the AI assistant asks every time, as for project.open. Before, a plugin could pass a project as text and have the import add files and web addresses through layer.addData / map.addTiles, which run inside the import without each passing the plugin's permissions. The test asserts user_only("project.importQgis").
I left out restricting paths to the project's folder. A project the user opens themselves loading the absolute paths and addresses it names is what QGIS does, and what a RustGIS .rgis does on project.open. A downloaded project's layers are named in the import's result (layers), and every skipped source is noted with its address. style.importQgis reads one named file and adds no data, and its path parameter already gates it as a file reader.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: the two labelsEnabled blocks (lines 291-304) read the same labeling node and differ only in enabled. Merge them into one block. Separately, Report::extend (line 88) looks unused, and its count replay loop calls note, a linear scan, up to 5000 times per note.

// Set up but switched off: carried over, switched off.
let off = node.attribute("labelsEnabled") == Some("0");
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 8f8eed6. The two labelsEnabled blocks are one, as suggested (enabled &= !off). Report::extend was unused and is gone. Report::note now finds a repeat through an index by layer, kind and text instead of scanning the notes (CodeRabbit's 4367543720).
I read the engine command (cmd/qgis.rs), qgis/mod.rs and the first 150 lines of qgis/source.rs (the data-source reading). I did not read expr.rs, renderer.rs, symbol.rs, labels.rs, qgis/tests.rs, the UI changes or the docs. I ran no tests, builds or clippy.
Bugs
WMS layers are added without their QGIS settings, and no note says so (cmd/qgis.rs:141). The WMS branch returns before visibility, opacity and scale range are applied. A hidden or semi-transparent WMS layer comes in fully visible. The XYZ branch notes the hidden case. The PR promises that nothing is left out without a note. Confidence: medium.
style.importQgis doesn't check label fields (cmd/qgis.rs:227). import_project checks that a label class's field exists in the layer and hides the class if not. import_style checks only the where clause. A .qml that labels from a missing field gets a label class that is switched on but has nothing to label from, and no note. Confidence: low to medium.
Security
A project file can point at local files and URLs (cmd/qgis.rs:25). Absolute paths and any value containing :// are passed unchanged to layer.addData (see source.rs::absolute). Opening an untrusted .qgs can therefore read local files or fetch remote URLs without the user seeing them first. The XML parsing itself is well bounded (DOCTYPE handling, node limit, depth limit). Confidence: low to medium.
The new commands aren't in the plugin blocklist, and I couldn't find where the assistant gates them.project.importQgis isn't in the NEVER list in plugins.rs, which lists project.open and similar commands. A grep of assistant and engine found no mention of the new command ids, so I don't know how the file and network approval applies. Confidence: low; I didn't verify the gating.
Performance
Report::extend looks unused (qgis/mod.rs:88). If something does use it, it calls the linear-scan note() up to 5000 times per note. Confidence: low.
Quality
Duplicate labelsEnabled blocks (qgis/mod.rs:291-304). Two blocks read the same labeling node and differ only in enabled. I posted a suggestion that merges them.
File reads in qgis_text use std::fs directly. AGENTS.md says web file access goes through Services. The PR says the web app passes the file's text or bytes instead, so this is probably fine. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
No violations found in the files I read. There are no unwrap/expect/panic calls, parsing uses get() and .take() bounds, and the new strings go through note text and tl!.
Hostile-input test is missing the new commands. The PR adds a hostile-input test for the map reader. I didn't check whether hostile_params_never_panic also runs the two new commands. Confidence: low.

…s fields are checked, and plugins can't run the import
- A WMS or XYZ layer gets its tile layer's visibility and opacity, and a scale range it can't have is noted.
- style.importQgis checks label fields and the renderer's field as project.importQgis does (one helper for both).
- project.importQgis is reserved to the user: a project names the files and web addresses its layers come from.
- Report notes are found by key rather than a scan; the unused Report::extend is gone; one labelsEnabled block.
- run_part sits above run's doc comment.
WMS/XYZ settings: now applied to the tile layer that was added. Details on the inline thread.
style.importQgis field checks: now shared with the project import through check_fields.
project.importQgis: now reserved to the user (plugins::NEVER). Details on the inline thread.
Report::extend and the duplicate labelsEnabled blocks: removed and merged.
Note lookup: notes are found through an index instead of a scan.
hostile_params_never_panic: it already runs both new commands with every junk value, and now also gets a QGIS project whose web layer, opacity and scale range are junk.
std::fs in qgis_text: left as is. The web app passes text or data, so the path branch only runs natively, as for project.open.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Concern (medium-low confidence): a text/data project carries layer paths and URLs inside the payload, and the import adds them via layer.addData, map.addTiles and service.add with no per-layer approval. The plugin sandbox is closed with NEVER. Check that the AI Assistant's approval gate (crates/assistant/src/tools.rs) also covers project.importQgis when it is called with text or data and no path, since the file and network access is hidden in the payload. When text is given without dir, relative paths also resolve against the process cwd (unwrap_or_default() gives ""). Also, text and data are not size-capped, unlike read_file's MAX_FILE.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid in part, fixed in 112181f. This follows up on the earlier thread (4367517494); the reasoning there for not restricting paths to the project's folder still holds.
AI assistant gate: this was already covered. gate checks user_only before anything else, whatever the parameters, so project.importQgis is asked about every time, with text or data as much as with path, and is never allowed for good. It now gives its own reason ("it adds the files and web addresses a QGIS project names") instead of the generic one, and gate_rules checks it for a text call.
Relative paths with text and no dir: valid. Such a layer is now noted ("relative to the project's folder, which the import wasn't given (pass dir)") and not looked for in the working directory. The engine test checks it.
Size caps: valid. text past MAX_FILE (256 MB), and data whose base64 would decode past it, are refused before decoding. A .qgz now inflates within MAX_FILE (read_matching_within) instead of the zip reader's general limit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Low-confidence concern: run_part takes the undo and redo stacks, calls self.run, and then restores them. This drops the inner command's undo snapshot, so a nested command that fails restores only its own snapshot. The enclosing command's snapshot is what undoes the earlier parts, so this relies on the outer run pushing exactly one step. If a nested command ever panics inside self.run, the stacks are still swapped back, but check that run doesn't early-return before the restore. The code looks fine as written. A short doc note on what happens when a part fails would help.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
As you say, it's correct as written. run catches a panic in guarded, restores the project and returns an error, and run_part has no early return, so the stacks always go back. I added the doc note you asked for in 112181f. A part that fails is undone by its own run. The parts before it stay until the command made of them fails too, and that command's run then restores the project as it found it. The stacks are put back on every return.
I read the engine command (crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs), the plugin deny-list entry, run_part and the test additions. I only skimmed the start of the new crates/map/src/qgis/ module (expr.rs). I did not review mod.rs, renderer.rs, symbol.rs, labels.rs or source.rs, or the docs and UI changes. I ran no builds or tests.
Bugs
Medium-low confidence:project.importQgis accepts text or data with the file and network sources hidden in the payload. It adds them through layer.addData, map.addTiles and service.add without per-layer approval. Plugins are blocked via NEVER. Check that the AI Assistant's approval gate also covers this command when it is called without a path (crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs:95).
Low confidence: with text and no dir, relative layer paths resolve against the process working directory (crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs:95).
Security
Low confidence:text and data are not size-capped, unlike read_file's MAX_FILE. A .qgz is unpacked through zip::read_matching, and I did not verify that function bounds the decompressed size.
No unwraps, panics or unsafe in non-test code. The test uses unwrap and panic!, which is allowed.
The test checks that the PostGIS password stays out of the import notes.
Performance
Nothing notable.
Quality
Low confidence:run_part swaps the undo and redo stacks around a nested run. It looks correct, and the test checks the "one undo step" behaviour. A doc note on what happens when a part fails would help (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:841).
The helpers props and color in palette.rs are now thin wrappers around crate::qgis. That is fine, but the wrappers could be dropped.
AGENTS.md
The hostile_params_never_panic case is extended, and the command is added to the plugin NEVER list.
rustgis-data and rustgis-map are used from the engine layer, which is allowed.
I did not check whether the UI strings use tl!.
Change size

Limit QGIS ZIP inflation to the loader's 256 MiB limit.
read_matching allows a matched entry to inflate to 1 GiB on native targets. qgis_text materializes that entry as a Vec<u8> before qgis::read_project applies its XML node limit. A small, highly compressible .qgz can therefore allocate far more memory than MAX_FILE allows and may exhaust the process.

- XYZ layers are added as overlays, as WMS layers are, so web layers keep the tree's order.
- A web layer takes the QGIS layer's blending mode (noted where it can't).
- A project given as text or data with no dir: a relative path is noted, not looked for in the working directory.
- text and data are refused past the file limit, and a .qgz inflates within it.
- The assistant's gate names what project.importQgis reaches; run_part's doc says what a failing part restores.
@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs:24-41 (ZIP inflation limit): valid, fixed in 112181f as you suggest. qgis_text now unpacks a .qgz with rustgis_data::zip::read_matching_within(…, MAX_FILE as usize), so its project inflates within the same 256 MiB as a .qgs read from disk. text and data payloads are capped at that limit too.
Second review, fixed in 112181f (details in the inline threads):
Assistant gate: it already asked about project.importQgis for text and data, and now gives its own reason.
Relative paths: with no dir, they're noted rather than resolved against the working directory.
Payload size:text and data are capped at the file limit, and .qgz inflates within it.
run_part: documented what a failing part restores.
CodeRabbit: XYZ layers are overlays, and web layers take their blending mode.
qgis_props and qgis_color in palette.rs: kept as thin wrappers. They're private to the colour-ramp reader, where their six call sites keep reading as before, so dropping them would be churn with no change in behaviour.
The test / Test (ubuntu-latest) failure on 8f8eed6 is remembered_database::remembered_database_chooser_cancel_selection_and_project_scope in the ui-egui smoke tests. It's flaky upstream: it failed the same way on main (run 40106456959), and it passes locally on this branch.

service.add doesn't always add a tile layer. Depending on the capabilities, it can add a coverage raster, a feature layer or a style (see service.rsOffer::Coverage and Offer::Features). In those cases the answer has no tile index, so tile_settings takes the None branch. It then reports "a hidden web layer, added shown" even though no tile layer exists. The layer's visibility and opacity are also never applied, and the function still returns Some(name).
Consider applying the visibility, opacity and scale range to the layer actually added (s.active_layer) when there is no index. Or note that the web layer was added as a different kind. It would also help to add a test for a WMS layer, because only the XYZ path is tested.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 4443fb5. web_settings (was tile_settings) now handles an answer with no tile index, as when the service offers the layer as features or a coverage. If the active layer changed, the map layer that was added takes the QGIS layer's visibility, transparency, blending and scale range, which a map layer has (unlike a tile layer). The "added shown" notes now apply only when neither a tile layer nor a map layer can be found. The engine test reads a project with a hidden, half-transparent, multiplied WMS layer with a scale range and applies it to a session's new map layer, so the path is tested without a live service.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: check_fields reports "labels from the field …, which the layer hasn't" for any visible class whose field is missing. If the class's clause already failed above, c.visible is false by this point, so that case is skipped. A default class with an empty field would still produce a misleading note if it is visible. Guard on !c.field.is_empty(), or check how Style::apply leaves the default class. (Low confidence.)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 4443fb5 (one line): check_fields skips a class with no field set, so a visible default class that labels nothing isn't noted as labelling from a missing field.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: read_file uses std::fs directly. This crate sits below apps/ and must build for wasm, where AGENTS.md says file access goes through Services. It compiles, but it will always fail at runtime in the browser. The web app has to pass text or data; the PR description says as much. Also, metadata followed by read is a TOCTOU gap, though the zip and XML limits still bound the result. Consider reading with File::open(..).take(MAX_FILE + 1) instead.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The std::fs part stays, as said in the first review's reply. The path branch only runs natively; the web app passes text or data, as the command's parameters document, so it never reaches read_file there. The TOCTOU part is fixed in 4443fb5: read_file now reads with File::open(..).take(MAX_FILE + 1) and refuses more than MAX_FILE, instead of checking metadata first.
I read the engine command, the gating changes, the source parsing and the tests. I did not read most of the other new crates/map/src/qgis/* files: mod.rs, renderer.rs, symbol.rs, labels.rs, the expr.rs body and tests.rs. I read none of the UI and docs changes. I ran nothing, so none of this is tested.
Bugs
A WMS layer that RustGIS adds as a non-tile layer is reported wrongly (medium confidence).service.add can add a coverage raster, a feature layer or a style instead of a tile layer. Its answer then has no tile index, so tile_settings reports "hidden web layer, added shown" and never applies the layer's visibility or opacity. The import still counts the layer as added. Only the XYZ path is tested. (crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs:220)
A spurious label-field note is possible (low confidence).check_fields can report "labels from the field , which the layer hasn't" for a visible default class whose field is empty. (crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs:280)
Security
I found no issues. project.importQgis is gated in the assistant for every parameter form (path, text and data), and it is added to the plugin NEVER list. Both have test coverage. PostGIS passwords are dropped from the sources and notes. Input is bounded by a 256 MB file limit and a 10,000-character expression limit. The PR also caps XML nodes, renderer classes and rule nesting; I did not read those caps in the code.
The imported project can name arbitrary local paths and URLs, and the import opens them. That is covered by the user-approval gate, which fits the design.
Performance
Nothing significant. The import loads the whole file, up to 256 MB, and base64 data is decoded in full. Both are bounded.
Quality
read_file uses std::fs directly, with a metadata-then-read gap (low confidence). It cannot work in the browser, where the web app has to pass text or data. (crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs:119)
The run_part approach keeps the import to one undo step, which looks sound. The tests cover the undo case.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic! in non-test code: none in the code I read. The unwrap calls in tests.rs are test code. I could not confirm this for the unread map files.
Hostile-input test: the PR adds a junk project to hostile_params_never_panic.
tl! and the i18n catalogs: I did not read the UI changes, so I did not check tl! use. Missing catalog entries are acceptable under AGENTS.md.
Asset attribution: I did not check for new assets.

# RustGIS — instructions for agents
## Never crash
- Input from files and command parameters is hostile: `get()` over indexing, clamp sizes,
bound recursion. `Session::run` and `analysis::run` catch escaped panics as a last resort.
…settings; drive-relative and blank-folder paths are noted
- service.add can answer with a map layer (features, a coverage) rather than tiles: that layer takes the QGIS layer's visibility, opacity, blending and scale range.
- A blank dir is none, so relative paths don't start from the working directory; a file named without a folder starts from '.'.
- C:roads.gpkg (relative to a drive's working directory) is noted, not opened.
- A label class with no field isn't noted as labelling from a missing one.
- read_file reads at most MAX_FILE + 1 bytes instead of checking the size first.
Third review, fixed in 4443fb5 (details in the inline threads):
WMS answer without a tile index: the map layer added as features or a coverage now takes the layer's settings.
Default class with no field: no longer noted as labelling from a missing field.
read_file: reads with a bounded take.
CodeRabbit: a blank dir is none, and drive-relative paths are noted.
std::fs in read_file stays, as explained in the thread. CodeRabbit's 17:14 comment had no response in it ("couldn't produce a complete response"), so there was nothing to act on.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
MAX_FILE is 256 MiB for text that goes to an XML parser. A .qgs or .qml is normally well under a few MB. The parsed DOM is several times larger than the source, so a hostile 256 MiB file (or a .qgz that inflates to that size) can use gigabytes on the desktop. In the browser it can run out of wasm memory. Consider a limit around 32 MiB. This is a robustness concern, not a panic. Confidence: medium-low.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid, fixed in 1981d74. A new MAX_XML (64 MiB) caps what a project or style parses: text, a file's text and a .qgz's inflated .qgs. The XML tree is several times the text, and real projects are a few megabytes. MAX_FILE (256 MiB) still bounds the raw bytes read, because a .qgz can carry data files beside its project. 64 rather than 32 MiB leaves room for big projects with many embedded styles. The engine test checks that text one byte over is refused before parsing.
I read the first 600 lines of the diff (the assistant gate, plugin deny-list, the new crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs, run_part, the tests and the palette.rs refactor). I did not read the rest, which includes the new crates/map/src/qgis/* modules, the UI changes and the docs. I could not run the code or the tests, so this review is from reading only.
Bugs
No definite bugs found in the part I read. Failure handling looks sound: if the import fails after map.new, the outer run restores the project. run_part also keeps the import to one undo step.
Security
project.importQgis is gated for the assistant, including when given text or data. It is also on the plugin deny-list, and the new tests cover both. I found nothing wrong there.
The test confirms the PostGIS password is left out of the import notes.
Medium-low confidence: the 256 MiB input cap (MAX_FILE) is large for something that goes to an XML parser. See the inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/qgis.rs.
Performance
Nothing else beyond the size cap above.
Quality
add_layer and web_settings duplicate the layer-level visibility, transparency, blend and scale-range assignments. A small helper would remove the repetition (low confidence, nit).
The hostile_params_never_panic entry only reaches project.importQgis. Since style.importQgis is registered too, a junk case for it would help. I could not confirm whether the existing sweep already covers it (low confidence).
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic! in non-test code. Tests may use them.
New commands are registered under crates/engine/src/cmd/*.rs.
File reads are bounded, and the web app passes text or data instead of a path.
I did not check ATTRIBUTION.md or i18n for the UI strings in crates/ui-egui. I also did not check the "refresh THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt after dependency changes" rule; the base64 and roxmltree crates may be new dependencies.

The file (or data) limit stays 256 MiB, as a .qgz can carry data beside its project; the XML a project or style parses into a tree several times its size is capped at 64 MiB, whether given as text, read as a file or inflated from a .qgz.
Fourth review: the XML size cap is fixed in 1981d74 (inline thread).
The summary's other notes, left as they are:
The duplicated layer-setting lines in add_layer and web_settings: they set different targets (a raster layer's three fields, and a feature or coverage layer's five), so a shared helper would be as long as the lines it replaces.
style.importQgis in hostile_params_never_panic: it's covered. The sweep runs every registered command, style.importQgis included, against every junk value.
Dependencies:base64 and roxmltree were already dependencies on main. This PR doesn't change any Cargo.toml, so THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt needs no refresh.

The active="0" check runs after the filter-conversion check. A switched-off rule whose filter can't be converted still gets a "left out" note, even though it would never have drawn. Moving the active check up, before the filter is converted, avoids the spurious note. Confidence: medium (minor).

Two gaps in file():
|layerid=N is parsed neither here nor noted. A multi-layer GeoPackage then silently loads its first layer, which breaks the module's "nothing is left out without a note" promise. |geometrytype= and similar options are also dropped silently.
The path comes straight from the project and goes to layer.addData unchanged. A .qgs from elsewhere can name /vsicurl/…, http(s)://… or a Windows UNC path (\\host\share), which the importer will then fetch. project.importQgis is rightly kept away from plugins and gated for the assistant. Consider also listing the files and addresses in the import notes, or refusing network and UNC paths from Source::File. Confidence: medium-low.
I read the first ~2,400 of the 2,798 diff lines: the engine command, the assistant and plugin gating, and most of the new rustgis_map::qgis module (mod, expr, labels, renderer, source, symbol). I did not read the last ~400 lines (the map crate's qgis/tests.rs and the UI and docs changes), and I ran no tests. Overall the import is carefully bounded and degrades with notes instead of panicking. I found no crash paths. The findings below are minor.
Bugs
Inactive label rules still get a "left out" note (crates/map/src/qgis/labels.rs, line 56). The active="0" check runs after the filter is converted. A switched-off rule whose filter can't convert reports a skipped rule that would never have drawn. Confidence: medium, low severity.
Unsupported ogr options are dropped without a note (crates/map/src/qgis/source.rs, line 93). |layerid= is neither parsed nor reported, so a multi-layer GeoPackage silently loads its first layer. That contradicts the module's "nothing is left out without a note" promise. Confidence: medium.
A GPKG: source with no table name is split wrongly (source.rs). GPKG:C:/x.gpkg is split on the last : into path C and table /x.gpkg. Confidence: low.
Raster colouring is always reported as skipped, even when the raster is added (mod.rs). The note is correct for the colouring, but the layer is still imported with opacity and scale range. Confidence: low.
Security
A project's data paths are not restricted (source.rs, line 93). Paths go to layer.addData unchanged, so a .qgs from elsewhere can name /vsicurl/…, http(s)://… or Windows UNC (\\host\share) locations, and the importer will fetch them. The command is correctly user-only (NEVER list for plugins, gate for the assistant, with tests), so the exposure is limited to a user opening an untrusted project. Consider listing the files and addresses in the notes, or refusing UNC and network paths. Confidence: medium-low.
XML handling looks sound: DTD entities are refused, there is a node limit and a 64 MiB cap on input, and base64 and .qgz sizes are bounded. The PostGIS password is stripped from notes, and a test covers that.
Performance
Nothing significant. Note counts are deduplicated through a hash map, lists are capped, and recursion depth is bounded.
Quality
The expression tokenizer accepts a -2 as two tokens (field, then number) and emits invalid SQL. It is caught later by the query::parse check, so this is harmless. Confidence: low.
Duplicate helpers are folded into qgis::props and qgis::color, which is good. palette.rs is now only a thin wrapper around them.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code, and indexing goes through get().
hostile_params_never_panic is extended with a hostile project.
The new commands are registered by id, and the plugin and assistant gating has tests.
The command uses std::fs only on the native path route. The web app is expected to pass text or data, which fits the "never break wasm" rule, though I did not build for wasm.
Interface text is not in scope for this review, since I did not read the UI diff.

Emit true and false unquoted in the QGIS filter converter.
A QGIS filter such as flag = true becomes "flag" = "true". The data-query parser rejects the quoted value, so the importer drops the filter and every row stays visible.
to_sql writes bare words as-is and writes Token::Field values in double quotes. true has no keyword mapping, so it falls through to Token::Field. The data-query literal() accepts true and false only as bare identifiers, not quoted identifiers. Emitting the literal bare matches what the parser accepts.

Summary
RustGIS can now open a QGIS project (
.qgsor.qgz) as a map, and apply a QGIS layer style (.qml) to a layer. It works for any project, and lists what it couldn't carry over exactly.Opening a project (
project.importQgis {"path" | "text" | "data", "dir"?}) creates a new map of the current project, as one undo step:Each layer keeps its look where RustGIS can draw it:
LIKE,IN,IS NULL, joined byAND,ORandNOT. Anything else is refused and noted, not guessed. The report: the command returns notes, layer by layer, of what was approximated and what was skipped.
Each of these is a candidate for a later step.
Hostile input: project files are treated as hostile.
<!DOCTYPE>is skipped; one with an internal subset (entity tricks) is refused.A layer style (
style.importQgis) applies a.qml's renderer, strokes, labels and layer settings to the selected layer.Changes by crate:
qgismodule:read_project,read_style,Style::apply,Report. Sources, expressions (to_sql), symbols, renderers and labels each have a file of their own.palette.rsuses its property and colour readers.cmd/qgis.rs:project.importQgisandstyle.importQgis.Session::run_partruns commands inside one, so the import undoes in one step..qgs/.qgz, andui.openItemhasqgisProject/qgisStylekinds.workspace.md› QGIS projects and styles;comparison/qgis.md.No new dependency (
roxmltreewas already used for QGIS colour ramps).I tested it against swisstopo's SMV25 project (66 layers, 27 annotation layers, 281-class road renderer, symbol levels): it opens in about 5 s. Against QGIS's own rendering of the same views, 7.5% (old town) and 11.7% (overview) of pixels differ visibly. Most of that is font markers, pattern fills and marker lines, which the report lists.
