Analysis: buffers, Tissot's circles and Spatial Join distances on the WGS 84 ellipsoid (#888) - #905
Fixes#888. Buffer was geodesic on a sphere of the mean radius (6,371,008.8 m), so on WGS 84 a 10 km buffer reached 9,944 to 10,011 m at the equator, 9,997 to 10,029 m at 46.5°N and 10,019 to 10,036 m at 60°N (up to 0.56 %), as @GISspecialistAlejandraDuque measured.
Everything went through rustgis_geom::Aeqd, the azimuthal equidistant projection on that sphere. This PR makes it ellipsoidal, which fixes all the tools built on it:
Aeqd on WGS 84 (crates/geom). It follows Karney's ellipsoidal azimuthal equidistant projection:
forward(p) solves the inverse geodesic problem from the centre to p, giving distance s and azimuth α, then returns (s·sin α, s·cos α);
inverse(x, y) solves the direct problem from the centre, with azimuth atan2(x, y) and distance hypot(x, y).
Both are solved with geographiclib-rs. The signatures don't change. Longitudes still come back within 180° of the centre's, and a pole centre still takes azimuths from its meridian, both ways. As a result:
a point's buffer is exact on WGS 84;
geodesic_destination, and so Tissot's circles, is exact too;
lines and polygons keep the method of Analysis: geodesic buffers #429 (one plane, or stretches of up to 300 km), now on the ellipsoid.
The nearest points were already found in Aeqd planes. The distance between them is now measured on the ellipsoid (new rustgis_geom::wgs84_distance_m), not with haversine. Before this, a feature inside a 10 km buffer could fail "Within a distance" 10 km.
The test that rules out far features (spread) now works on a sphere of WGS 84's smallest radius of curvature, b²/a = 6,335,439 m (new WGS84_MIN_RADIUS_M). Every path on the ellipsoid is at least as long as on that sphere, so the shorter distances near the equator are never ruled out. One example: 0.0904369° north of the equator is 10,000 m on WGS 84 but 10,056 m on the mean sphere.
Select Layer By Location already buffers through geodesic_buffer, so its distance moves to the ellipsoid with Buffer.
Docs:docs/user-guide/analysis.md (Buffer and Spatial Join distances; lengths and areas still on the sphere).
Choices in this PR
No new crate.geographiclib-rs 0.2.7 is already in Cargo.lock through geo 0.33. It is named here with default-features = false, as geo names it, so the lock file gains only the rustgis-geom → geographiclib-rs edge. It is pure Rust and builds for wasm.
The same API.Aeqd::new, forward and inverse and geodesic_destination keep their signatures. geodesic.rs and tissot.rs don't change outside their tests.
No sphere fast path. A geodesic solve costs more than a few trig calls, but the totals stay small. Timings in a release build on Windows, ellipsoid against sphere (main), with 2,000 features a side spread over 10° × 10° at 40–50°N:
Run
Ellipsoid
Sphere
Spatial Join, Within 5 km: 2,000 points × 2,000 lines of 20 vertices
Buffer 1 km: 3,000 lines of 100 vertices (300,000 vertices)
1.13 s
0.70 s
Buffer 1 km: 1,500 polygons of 200 vertices (300,000 vertices)
0.47 s
0.18 s
Buffer 1 km, dissolved: the 3,000 lines
1.80 s
1.51 s
The geodesic solves add 1.2–2.6 times to a buffer, not 10–50 times, since geo's offset curves and union take most of the time. The browser (wasm) build wasn't timed.
The solver is one staticLazyLock<Geodesic>, so its series coefficients are worked out once.
Tests compare with GeographicLib's own values (pyproj.Geod(ellps="WGS84")), hard-coded in rustgis-geom:
destinations 10 km from 0°, 46.5° and 60°N, 1,000 km from 60°N, and from either pole, to 1e-11° (about a micrometre);
distances and azimuths from 343 km to 16,579 km, to 0.01 mm and 1e-9°.
In rustgis-analysis, buffers and joins are measured with geo's Geodesic.
Long edges of large features are still split every 10 km along a great circle drawn on the sphere through geodetic latitudes (geodesic_interpolate), not along the ellipsoid's geodesic. This only matters for features too large for one plane (more than 150 km from their centre).
The buffer keeps its distance from that path.
The path itself is the same as the ellipsoid's geodesic to 0.1 m on a 220 km edge, but 190 m off at the middle of a 1,700 km edge along 40°N and 1.9 km off on a 5,400 km edge along 50°N.
Edges that long were drawn the same way before this PR.
Two places still use the mean sphere:
the thresholds that choose one plane or stretches (150 km and 300 km, measured with haversine);
Tissot's latitude margin near the poles.
Both are rough limits, not measures.
The WGS 84 ellipsoid is used for every layer, whatever datum its coordinate system names. Coordinates are lon/lat once read, as before.
Testing
rustgis-geom:
azimuthal_equidistant_keeps_distances_from_its_centre checks against GeographicLib's distances and azimuths, a round trip from either pole, and a longitude kept next to the centre's across the antimeridian. It also checks wgs84_distance_m, and that a distance from the equator is shorter than on the mean sphere but not shorter than on the sphere of WGS84_MIN_RADIUS_M.
destination_lies_at_its_distance_and_bearing now checks distance and azimuth through Aeqd, plus the meridian arc from 60° to 61°N (111,420.728 m).
rustgis-analysis:
New buffers_keep_their_distance_on_the_ellipsoid: every vertex of a 10 km point buffer at 0°, 46.5°N, 60°N and 33.4°S is 10,000 m ± 1 mm from its centre on WGS 84. Every vertex of a 1 km buffer of a 2 km line at 46.5°N (east, north and north-east) is 1,000 m ± 1 mm from the line.
New distances_are_on_the_wgs84_ellipsoid (join): the 10,000 m / 10,056 m case above, through distance_m, may_be_within and search_box.
New spatial_join_within_a_distance_at_the_ellipsoids_edge: the same case through the Spatial Join tool with 20 stops, so through its grid index. The stop at 0.0904369° (9,999.995 m) is joined and the one at 0.0905° (10,006.972 m) is not. With the mean radius back in spread, the test fails.
Existing tests now measure on WGS 84 instead of with haversine:
buffers_keep_their_distance_on_the_earth, where the 1,000 km circle at 60°N now reaches GeographicLib's 68.970°N and 51.018°N;
feet_buffer_has_the_requested_ground_radius, now within 1e-6 m;
the_classic_world_grid_of_geodesic_circles, now within 1 mm;
spatial_join_closest_and_within_a_distance;
the join module's tests.
Their brute-force helpers measure on the ellipsoid only the samples within 1.2 % of the nearest on the sphere, so they don't slow the test suite down.
cargo xtask ci passes on Windows: cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test --workspace.
The wasm build wasn't checked here. geographiclib-rs already builds there through geo.
… WGS 84 ellipsoid (opengeos#888)
Aeqd becomes Karney's ellipsoidal azimuthal equidistant projection: forward
is the inverse geodesic problem from the centre, inverse the direct one,
both solved by geographiclib-rs (already in the tree through geo). A point's
buffer and geodesic_destination (Tissot's circles) are exact on WGS 84;
lines and polygons keep opengeos#429's planes, now on the ellipsoid.
Spatial Join measures the nearest pair with wgs84_distance_m, and its
pre-filter uses WGS 84's smallest radius of curvature (b^2/a), so the
ellipsoid's shorter distances near the equator are never ruled out.
Tests compare with GeographicLib's values (pyproj.Geod(ellps="WGS84")).
Lengths and areas stay spherical (opengeos#894).

Explanation
Issue #888 requires geodesic buffer vertices at the requested distance on the WGS 84 ellipsoid, as PROJ Geod.fwd places them. The whole-PR diff of crates/geom/src/lib.rs (merge base to head) shows Aeqd::forward and Aeqd::inverse now call GeographicLib's WGS84 inverse and direct solvers. Aeqd keeps its distances from the centre true on the ellipsoid. geodesic_destination uses this projection, so point buffers and Tissot circles follow the ellipsoid. Tests hard-code GeographicLib values: 10 km destinations from 0°, 46.5°N and 60°N to 1e-11°, a 1,000 km destination from 60°N, and pole cases. Distance and azimuth checks cover 343 km to 16,579 km. Analysis tests (per the PR) check 10 km point buffers at several latitudes to 1 mm; I did not re-read those tests in this review. The incremental change since the previous review adds NaN output for non-finite inverse inputs and a Spatial Join test. It does not change buffer behaviour. Length and area tools stay spherical. #888 does not require them, and the PR documents this. Long-edge interpolation and the mean-sphere thresholds are disclosed limits, not #888 requirements. No unmet coding requirement remains.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The Aeqd, wgs84_distance_m and geodesic_destination changes in crates/geom/src/lib.rs implement #888 directly. The new WGS84_MIN_RADIUS_M constant is a public addition that supports the Spatial Join search bound. Its value (b²/a) gives a valid lower bound on ellipsoidal path length. The metric coefficient along the meridian is at least b²/a, and the prime-vertical coefficient is at least a. In crates/analysis/src/join.rs, distance_m uses wgs84_distance_m instead of haversine_m, and spread uses WGS84_MIN_RADIUS_M. These changes keep join distances on the same ellipsoid as buffers, so Within a distance results agree with buffers. The test helper changes in tools.rs and tissot.rs measure the same quantities on WGS 84 and tighten tolerances. Select Layer By Location follows through geodesic_buffer. The docs/user-guide/analysis.md change describes the new behaviour and states that lengths and areas remain spherical. The Cargo.toml and crates/geom/Cargo.toml changes add geographiclib-rs, which the PR says is already in Cargo.lock through geo. I did not verify the lock-file claim in this review. No demonstrated unrelated production change was found.

A rabbit checks each measured mile, WGS 84 replaces the sphere. Buffers trace their paths with care, Geodesic distances now appear. The join finds points within its bounds, And hops along with numbers clear.
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
The change is sound. It moves Aeqd, geodesic_destination and the join distances from the 6,371 km sphere to the WGS 84 ellipsoid, using geographiclib-rs. I found no correctness bugs. I read the whole diff and checked wrap_lon and the other helpers in crates/geom/src/lib.rs. I did not run any tests.
Bugs
None found.
WGS84_MIN_RADIUS_M is the right bound for spread. The ellipsoid's metric is M²dφ² + N²cos²φ dλ², and both M and N are at least b²/a, so a sphere of that radius never gives a longer path. The search pre-filter therefore can't rule out a feature that is actually in range. The distances_are_on_the_wgs84_ellipsoid test covers this.
Aeqd::inverse handles the poles because the azimuth comes from atan2(x, y) relative to lon0. The new pole round-trip test covers it.
Latitudes are clamped before every solver call, and wrap_lon keeps longitudes continuous across the antimeridian.
Performance
crates/geom/src/lib.rs:273: Aeqd::forward and inverse now run a full GeographicLib solve per vertex instead of a few trig calls. Buffers, nearest_pair (called twice per distance_m) and Spatial Join all call them per vertex, and this also runs in the wasm build. The PR has no benchmark. It's worth timing a large Spatial Join or a line buffer before merging. Confidence: medium.
Quality
geodesic_length_m, geodesic_ring_area_m2, haversine_m and geodesic_interpolate stay spherical. Join distances and buffers are now ellipsoidal, so measurements in the same workflow can differ by up to about 0.5%. Either note this in the docs or open a follow-up issue. Confidence: low.
The test helpers brute and km_to_every filter samples to within 1.2% of the nearest on the sphere. That's reasonable, but the 0.6% bound it relies on is only in comments.
Security
Nothing to report. The new dependency is already in the tree through geo.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic was added in non-test code, and the new code uses no unsafe.
geographiclib-rs is a pure-Rust crate, so the wasm build should be fine. I couldn't check that, or cargo deny and cargo xtask notices, from here. Please confirm the licence passes deny.toml and that THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt is refreshed, since Cargo.lock changed.
The docs in docs/user-guide/analysis.md are updated.

…ellipsoid's 10 km edge; docs note lengths and areas stay spherical (opengeos#888)
Review follow-up for opengeos#905: 20 stops so the join indexes them; the stop
0.0904369 deg north of the equator (9,999.995 m on WGS 84, 10,056 m on the

The test fails with the mean radius back in the join's pre-filter.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The change is sound. It moves Aeqd and the spatial-join distances from a sphere to the WGS 84 ellipsoid through geographiclib-rs. I found no definite bugs. I did not build or run the tests, so I am relying on reading the diff and the tests it adds.
Bugs
None found. The WGS84_MIN_RADIUS_M = b²/a bound holds, because the ellipsoid's metric has M ≥ b²/a and N ≥ a, both at least that radius. The join's search window therefore cannot rule out a feature that is within range. Confidence: high.
Security
None. The new dependency was already in the tree through geo, and unsafe is not used.
Performance
Every Aeqd::forward and inverse call now runs a full geodesic inverse or direct solve instead of a few trig calls. Buffers and the join call them per vertex, so large layers may slow down. Confidence: low, about 40%. The inline comment asks for a benchmark.
Quality
Aeqd::inverse does not check that its metres are finite. Callers seem to filter non-finite results, but a guard would be safer. Confidence: low (inline).
Several places still use the spherical haversine_m or EARTH_RADIUS_M: geodesic.rs (ONE_PIECE_M, STRETCH_M), tissot.rs:154 and network.rs. The error is at most 0.6%, so this is probably acceptable. It is inconsistent with the new docs saying distances are on WGS 84. Confidence: low.
The test helpers brute and km_to_every are duplicated across join.rs and tools.rs. This is a nit.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap() or panic! was added to non-test code, and wasm compatibility looks fine since geographiclib-rs is pure Rust. The Cargo.lock change is present.
I could not check whether THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt was refreshed with cargo xtask notices, because it is not in the changed-files list. It may be needed for the new direct dependency, so run cargo xtask notices and cargo deny check licenses. Confidence: medium.
The docs were updated.

…gth and area bounds (opengeos#888)
Review follow-up for opengeos#905: Aeqd::inverse returned a finite longitude with a
NaN latitude for NaN or infinite metres; it now returns NaN for both. The
user guide's note on spherical lengths and areas now says up to about 0.6 %
for lengths and 0.9 % for areas (a small area near a pole), not 0.5 %.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The change replaces the spherical Aeqd, geodesic-destination and join distances with WGS 84 ellipsoid geodesics from geographiclib-rs. I found no correctness bugs.
What I checked
Aeqd:
forward and inverse are consistent, including the pole azimuth convention.
Non-finite input gives NaN for both coordinates.
The longitude stays within 180° of the centre.
WGS84_MIN_RADIUS_M: the value is b²/a = 6,335,439.327 m, which is correct. The bound argument holds, because the meridional radius M is at least b²/a and N·cosφ is at least R·cosφ. So spread never rules out a join feature that the ellipsoid keeps within range.
wgs84_distance_m: it clamps latitudes and passes NaN through, and I saw no panics.
Never-crash rules: there is no unwrap, expect or unsafe in the non-test changes.
wasm:geographiclib-rs is added with default-features = false, and the lock file change is only the new dependency edge. Please confirm that cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web and cargo deny check licenses stay green. I couldn't run either.
Tests: the new tests use reference values from GeographicLib and cover the 10 km join edge case. The docs now state the ellipsoid for distances and the sphere for lengths and areas.
Bugs
None found.
Performance
Aeqd::forward and inverse now run a full geodesic solve per call, instead of a few trig operations. Buffers, Tissot circles and the join's two nearest_pair passes call them per vertex. This costs more, especially in the browser. Please benchmark a large buffer before and after. Confidence: medium-low. Inline comment posted.
Quality
Edge densification:densify and fits in crates/analysis/src/geodesic.rs still use spherical great circles (geodesic_interpolate, haversine_m) for edges and thresholds, while buffer distances are now ellipsoidal. On long edges the buffer is exact about the great-circle polyline, not about the true geodesic. The new line-buffer test covers only 2 km lines. Consider a multi-thousand-km test or a docs note. Confidence: low-medium. I couldn't anchor an inline comment there because the file isn't in the diff.
Tissot spacing:tissot.rs still computes reach with EARTH_RADIUS_M. It only spaces the circle centres, so the error is minor, but it is inconsistent with the now-ellipsoidal circles. Confidence: low.
Test helpers: the brute and km_to_every helpers pre-filter samples on the sphere with a 1.2% window. That is sound, but the same code is duplicated in join.rs and tools.rs. A shared test helper would be cleaner. Confidence: low (nit).
Security
None found.
AGENTS.md
Nothing to flag, beyond confirming that cargo xtask notices and THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt are refreshed for the new dependency. The diff doesn't show those files being touched, so please check them. geographiclib-rs is already in the tree through geo, so the licence should already be allowed. Confidence: low-medium.

Summary
Fixes #888.
Everything went through
rustgis_geom::Aeqd, the azimuthal equidistant projection on that sphere. This PR makes it ellipsoidal, which fixes all the tools built on it:Aeqdon WGS 84 (crates/geom). It follows Karney's ellipsoidal azimuthal equidistant projection:forward(p)solves the inverse geodesic problem from the centre top, giving distance s and azimuth α, then returns (s·sin α, s·cos α);inverse(x, y)solves the direct problem from the centre, with azimuth atan2(x, y) and distance hypot(x, y).Both are solved with
geographiclib-rs. The signatures don't change. Longitudes still come back within 180° of the centre's, and a pole centre still takes azimuths from its meridian, both ways. As a result:geodesic_destination, and so Tissot's circles, is exact too;Spatial Join distances (
crates/analysis/src/join.rs):Aeqdplanes. The distance between them is now measured on the ellipsoid (newrustgis_geom::wgs84_distance_m), not with haversine. Before this, a feature inside a 10 km buffer could fail "Within a distance" 10 km.spread) now works on a sphere of WGS 84's smallest radius of curvature, b²/a = 6,335,439 m (newWGS84_MIN_RADIUS_M). Every path on the ellipsoid is at least as long as on that sphere, so the shorter distances near the equator are never ruled out. One example: 0.0904369° north of the equator is 10,000 m on WGS 84 but 10,056 m on the mean sphere.Select Layer By Location already buffers through
geodesic_buffer, so its distance moves to the ellipsoid with Buffer.Docs:
docs/user-guide/analysis.md(Buffer and Spatial Join distances; lengths and areas still on the sphere).Choices in this PR
No new crate.
geographiclib-rs0.2.7 is already inCargo.lockthroughgeo0.33. It is named here withdefault-features = false, asgeonames it, so the lock file gains only therustgis-geom → geographiclib-rsedge. It is pure Rust and builds for wasm.The same API.
Aeqd::new,forwardandinverseandgeodesic_destinationkeep their signatures.geodesic.rsandtissot.rsdon't change outside their tests.No sphere fast path. A geodesic solve costs more than a few trig calls, but the totals stay small. Timings in a release build on Windows, ellipsoid against sphere (
main), with 2,000 features a side spread over 10° × 10° at 40–50°N:The geodesic solves add 1.2–2.6 times to a buffer, not 10–50 times, since
geo's offset curves and union take most of the time. The browser (wasm) build wasn't timed.The solver is one
staticLazyLock<Geodesic>, so its series coefficients are worked out once.Tests compare with GeographicLib's own values (
pyproj.Geod(ellps="WGS84")), hard-coded inrustgis-geom:In
rustgis-analysis, buffers and joins are measured withgeo'sGeodesic.Limits
Lengths and areas are still on the sphere:
haversine_m,geodesic_length_mandgeodesic_ring_area_m2. That covers Calculate Geometry ([Bug]: Calculate Geometry area and perimeter are computed on a sphere, 0.26 % off on the WGS 84 ellipsoid in Italy #894), the overlap a Spatial Join measures, the network tools' edge lengths and the measure tool. Measuring touches more tools, so it is left for [Bug]: Calculate Geometry area and perimeter are computed on a sphere, 0.26 % off on the WGS 84 ellipsoid in Italy #894.Long edges of large features are still split every 10 km along a great circle drawn on the sphere through geodetic latitudes (
geodesic_interpolate), not along the ellipsoid's geodesic. This only matters for features too large for one plane (more than 150 km from their centre).Two places still use the mean sphere:
Both are rough limits, not measures.
The WGS 84 ellipsoid is used for every layer, whatever datum its coordinate system names. Coordinates are lon/lat once read, as before.
Testing
rustgis-geom:azimuthal_equidistant_keeps_distances_from_its_centrechecks against GeographicLib's distances and azimuths, a round trip from either pole, and a longitude kept next to the centre's across the antimeridian. It also checkswgs84_distance_m, and that a distance from the equator is shorter than on the mean sphere but not shorter than on the sphere ofWGS84_MIN_RADIUS_M.geodesic_destination_and_interpolationchecks against GeographicLib's destinations, including the 10 km cases from [Bug]: Geodesic buffer is exact on a sphere, up to 0.6 % off on the WGS 84 ellipsoid #888.destination_lies_at_its_distance_and_bearingnow checks distance and azimuth throughAeqd, plus the meridian arc from 60° to 61°N (111,420.728 m).rustgis-analysis:New
buffers_keep_their_distance_on_the_ellipsoid: every vertex of a 10 km point buffer at 0°, 46.5°N, 60°N and 33.4°S is 10,000 m ± 1 mm from its centre on WGS 84. Every vertex of a 1 km buffer of a 2 km line at 46.5°N (east, north and north-east) is 1,000 m ± 1 mm from the line.New
distances_are_on_the_wgs84_ellipsoid(join): the 10,000 m / 10,056 m case above, throughdistance_m,may_be_withinandsearch_box.New
spatial_join_within_a_distance_at_the_ellipsoids_edge: the same case through the Spatial Join tool with 20 stops, so through its grid index. The stop at 0.0904369° (9,999.995 m) is joined and the one at 0.0905° (10,006.972 m) is not. With the mean radius back inspread, the test fails.Existing tests now measure on WGS 84 instead of with haversine:
buffers_keep_their_distance_on_the_earth, where the 1,000 km circle at 60°N now reaches GeographicLib's 68.970°N and 51.018°N;feet_buffer_has_the_requested_ground_radius, now within 1e-6 m;the_classic_world_grid_of_geodesic_circles, now within 1 mm;spatial_join_closest_and_within_a_distance;Their brute-force helpers measure on the ellipsoid only the samples within 1.2 % of the nearest on the sphere, so they don't slow the test suite down.
