Summary

The Labeling pane edits every label class, not only Default. Its Class section gets:

  • A Class list that chooses the class every section of the pane shows and edits: field, SQL, text symbol, position and visibility range. Each control runs its labels.* command with that class's class; Default is sent without one, so steps recorded on it are unchanged. The choice is kept per project and layer, and goes back to Default when the class goes away (an undo, a script, the Assistant).
  • New: adds the next free "Class N" with the chosen class's field, text symbol, placement and range (labels.class.add with from), listed before Default, and chooses it. Off at the 64-class limit, with a tooltip saying why.
  • Rename: an inline box. Enter or clicking away renames, Escape leaves the name as it was, and a refused name (empty, or another class's) keeps the box open with the notice saying why. Default can be renamed.
  • Move Up / Move Down: the order of the list is the placement priority when labels compete for room ([Feature]: Label classes label their features independently #732). Default stays last.
  • Remove: set apart at the end of the row. Off for Default, with a tooltip saying it can be renamed or hidden instead.
  • Visible: hides or shows the chosen class.

A colour pick previews and undoes on the class it was made on, even if another class is chosen mid-pick. The SQL tab's draft is kept per class, and its note now says that each class labels the features its own clause matches. The ribbon keeps editing Default; having it follow the class chosen in the pane belongs with the redesign of the label controls, as its own issue.

docs/user-guide/cartography.md describes the class list, and the pane's introduction and the SQL tab's Clear now speak of the chosen class.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci passes.
  • New tests in labelpane.rs: the_chosen_class_is_the_one_edited, the_pane_goes_back_to_default_when_its_class_goes_away, classes_are_made_renamed_ordered_and_removed_from_the_pane, a_refused_class_name_keeps_the_box_open, new_is_off_at_the_class_limit, the_sql_tab_edits_the_chosen_class, a_colour_pick_stays_on_its_class.
  • Manual, on the World Atlas sample (Cities): New, Rename (Enter, click away, Escape, a taken name), Move Up/Down and the label order on the map, Remove, Visible, editing each section on a class and on Default, a colour drag on a class, undo and redo of each step, and the pane going back to Default after undoing a New.

The Labeling pane now selects and manages label classes. Its Field, SQL, text style, placement, visibility-range, and color controls operate on the selected class. The ribbon continues to edit Default.

Changes: Label class editing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Class selection and management
crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md
The pane scopes class selection to a project, map, and layer, and defaults to Default when the selection is missing or invalid. It adds controls to create, rename, reorder, remove, and show or hide classes. Tests cover class lifecycle behavior, rename refusal, selection fallback, and the class limit. The guide documents the controls and Default restrictions.
Selected-class settings
crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md
The Field, SQL, text style, placement, and visibility-range controls read and update the selected class. Commands include the class name for named classes and omit it for Default. Tests cover class-specific edits and SQL behavior. The guide describes the selected class’s SQL clause.
Class-specific color picks
crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs
Color-pick state identifies a layer and class. A pending pick is finished before the target changes, and a pick is discarded if its target no longer exists. The ribbon passes None to target Default. Tests cover class-targeted previews and commits.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the Labeling pane gains controls to choose, add, rename, remove and order label classes. It matches the summary, the description and the linked objectives (#722, #618). The title is specific and does not reference files or noise. Its length (86 characters, 13 words) is long, but the content is accurate.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has a Summary section that explains the change and why it is needed, a Testing section listing cargo xtask ci, seven named new tests and manual steps on the World Atlas sample, and a Related issue section that closes #722 and #618. The description says the ribbon keeps editing Default and points to a separate issue. Two points need attention. First, the PR objectives say issue #722 states that #618 stays open, so Closes #618 may close the broader issue too early. Second, the description links no separate issue for the ribbon follow-up, so the reviewer cannot trace it.

Resolution

Optional: confirm whether Closes #618 should be replaced with Part of #618, since #722 says #618 remains open. Also add the number or link of the follow-up issue for the ribbon behaviour, so it can be traced from this PR.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#722] The pane selects a class and applies the selection to field, SQL, text symbol, placement, and visibility-range commands. It supports add-from-selected, rename, remove, reorder, visibility, the 64-class limit, per-project and per-layer selection, and fallback to Default. Default omits the class parameter, and the ribbon remains Default-only. The listed tests cover selection, fallback, lifecycle, limit, SQL, and class-scoped colour picks. [#618] The change implements the relevant pane part of the multiple-class feature, including per-class SQL and label settings. The broader engine and deferred enhancements are not required for this pane step.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes stay within the linked issue scope. labelpane.rs adds class selection and management, per-class editing, SQL drafts, and class-scoped colour previews. ribbon.rs preserves Default-only editing, which #722 excludes. cartography.md documents the new pane behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Code review

I read the labelpane.rs diff and checked it against the labels.class.move command in the engine. I did not read the whole diff: only the first 600 lines, which cover the labelpane.rs changes up to the new tests, so the cartography.md and ribbon.rs edits are unchecked. I did not build or run anything. The pane now edits whichever label class is chosen, with New, Rename, Move Up/Down, Remove and Visible controls. I found no crash risks and no security problems.

Bugs

  • Remove jumps to Default even when refused (labelpane.rs:226, confidence medium-low). choose(.., None) runs whether or not labels.class.remove succeeded. If the command is refused, the pane switches to Default while the class still exists. New and Rename only react to success. I posted an inline suggestion.

Security

  • Nothing found.

Performance

  • Nothing found. The per-frame extras() scans are bounded by MAX_LABEL_CLASSES.

Quality

  • Nothing worth raising. Move Up/Down passes an index that matches the to semantics of labels.class.move. The colour-drag preview now tracks the class and finishes a pending drag when the class changes.

AGENTS.md

  • New literals use tl! and i18n::fmt. I saw no unwrap, expect or panic in the non-test code I read. The tests use #[allow(clippy::unwrap_used)], as before.
  • One thing to check: tl!(label) with a non-literal ("Move Up" and "Move Down" in the loop) may not be picked up by the translation extractor. The existing code already uses tl!(label) the same way.

Code review

The PR adds a class chooser with New, Rename, Move Up, Move Down, Remove and Visible to the Labeling pane. Every section now edits the chosen class. I read the diff only and did not build or run the tests.

Bugs

  • No definite bugs found. I checked these paths and they hold up:
    • Resetting to Default when the chosen class disappears.
    • The rename flow: Enter, Escape, a refused name that keeps the box open, and a stale rename dropped after the class or layer changes.
    • Colour-drag handling when the class changes mid-pick, and when the class is removed mid-pick.
    • Recorded steps: Default's steps still name no class.

Security

  • Nothing to raise. The change is UI-only, and the parameters go through the existing labels.* commands.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. The per-frame extras() scans are bounded by MAX_LABEL_CLASSES (64).

Quality

  • The blank line between two tests is missing (inline comment, nit, high confidence).
  • Low confidence: classes() creates its rename and chosen-class entries in egui temp data that are keyed on the class name. An entry for a pane that is closed mid-rename lingers until the owner check discards it. This is harmless.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code, and no unsafe. Lookups use get or Option.
  • New user-visible strings use tl! or i18n::fmt. The catalogs don't need updating.
  • Behaviour changes are covered by new tests, and the user guide is updated.
  • Not checked: I couldn't run cargo xtask ci, so formatting of the long use line at the top of labelpane.rs is unverified.

Code review

I read the whole diff and found no definite bugs, so I posted no inline comments. This is a static review only. I couldn't build or run anything here, so none of it, including the new tests, was compiled or run.

The PR makes the Labeling pane edit the chosen label class instead of only Default. It adds a class chooser with New, Rename, Move Up, Move Down, Remove and Visible. Every section now takes the chosen class. color_drag also takes a class, and the ribbon passes None for Default.

Bugs

  • None confirmed.
  • Draft SQL lost on rename (low confidence, minor). The SQL draft's owner id includes the class name (crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs:332). Renaming a class resets an unapplied SQL draft on it. The same happens when the pane falls back to Default after a class goes away. This is cosmetic.
  • Colour pick during a rename (low confidence, minor). A colour pick left pending on class "A" is committed by name. If "A" is renamed before the pick finishes, apply_color_drag finds no such class and the pick is dropped quietly. The window is very small.

Security

  • None. The pane only sends command parameters built from the project's own class names, and the rename path trims and validates through label_class_name.

Performance

  • None. chosen and extras are cheap per-frame lookups over at most 64 classes.

Quality

  • Long import line (low confidence). The use rustgis_engine::map::symbology::{…} line at the top of labelpane.rs is about 150 characters. Check that cargo fmt --check accepts it under the repo's max_width.
  • Missing blank line in tests. There is none before fn labels after the previous test. Rustfmt won't flag it.
  • Stale comment. The doc comment on run still says "on the active layer" without mentioning the new return value. Option<Value> is useful, but the comment should say what it returns.
  • Interface text. The new strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, as AGENTS.md asks, and I saw no missing wrapping. tl!(label) with a non-literal follows existing practice in this file.

AGENTS.md

  • Never crash. I saw no unwrap, expect, indexing or panics in the non-test code. Class lookups go through Option, and a missing class makes color_drag return early.
  • Everything is a command. The pane still goes through labels.* commands, so each change undoes as one step. Default's steps carry no class parameter, so recorded tasks stay as before.
  • Docs. docs/user-guide/cartography.md is updated. It covers the new controls and states that the ribbon still edits Default.
  • Tests. The new tests cover choosing a class, a class going away, New/Move/Rename/Remove with undo, a refused rename, the class limit, the SQL tab, and a colour pick staying on its class.

Code review

I read the whole diff (labelpane.rs, the docs and a 6-byte ribbon.rs change) and found nothing I'd block on. I made no inline comments. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

Nothing found. What I checked:

  • Class selection: chosen looks the stored name up case-insensitively among the extra classes and falls back to Default. A class removed by an undo, a script or the Assistant therefore can't leave the pane pointing at nothing.
  • Colour drag:
    • color_drag finishes a pending drag first when the layer or class changes.
    • apply_color_drag returns quietly if the layer or class has gone.
    • The preview colour is restored before labels.style runs, so a drag is still one undo step.
  • Rename box:
    • A refused name keeps the box open and resets focused, so focus is requested again.
    • Escape and an unchanged name both leave without running the command.
    • The state is keyed by project, map, layer and class, so a stale rename is dropped when any of those changes.
  • New: labels.class.add returns class in its result (crates/engine/src/tests.rs:1693), which is what classes relies on to select the new class.
  • Move Up / Move Down: the to index counts only the classes listed before Default, which matches how at and count are computed. Default is correctly not movable or removable.
  • Panics: I saw no unwrap, expect or indexing in the new non-test code, so it follows the never-crash rule.

Security

Nothing found. The pane only issues engine commands, and the class name from the text box goes through label_class_name before it reaches labels.class.rename.

Performance

Nothing significant. extras(l).find/position scans at most MAX_LABEL_CLASSES entries per frame.

Quality

  • Long import line (confidence: low): the use rustgis_engine::map::symbology::{…} line is long. cargo xtask ci runs cargo fmt, so it will be reformatted if it exceeds the width limit.
  • Name collisions (confidence: low):
    • Class (the pane struct) is easy to confuse with LabelClass.
    • The class section function and the classes function share almost the same name.
    • Neither is a problem now.
  • Tests: the new tests cover the chooser, rename, move, remove and class-scoped colour drag, and the existing tests were updated for the new color_drag signature.

AGENTS.md

  • Translations: new UI strings use tl! or i18n::fmt, as required. Missing catalog entries are acceptable under the repo's rules.
  • Architecture and assets: changes are confined to L6 (ui-egui) and its docs, and add no dependencies or assets.
  • Commands: the pane runs existing labels.* commands, so everything still undoes and records as a command.

Code review

This PR makes the Labeling pane edit one label class at a time. It adds a class chooser, New, Rename, Move Up, Move Down, Remove and Visible. A colour pick now stays on the class it started on. I read the diff and pr-context/AGENTS.md. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • No definite bugs found.
  • Low confidence: the Renaming state is cleared only when the classes function next runs. If the pane closes mid-rename, the rename box can reappear later with stale text (inline comment).

Security

  • Nothing found. The new code takes no external input beyond what the existing commands already handle.

Performance

  • Low confidence, minor: layer_key clones the map name String several times a frame. The cost is negligible.

Quality

  • The tests cover the main paths: choosing a class, the class vanishing after an undo or remove, copied and deleted maps, the class limit, refused names, case-only renames, the SQL tab, and a colour pick that spans classes.
  • new_name falls back to an empty string if all candidate names are taken. The New button is disabled at the limit, so this can't be reached.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap or panic! in the non-test code, and the new interface text goes through tl! and i18n::fmt.
  • Docs are updated in cartography.md.
  • No new dependencies, so no changes to deny.toml or the third-party licence files are needed.
  • Not checked: I couldn't run cargo xtask ci, so I haven't confirmed fmt or clippy pass. The long use line on labelpane.rs line 9 may not pass cargo fmt.

Key SQL drafts by owner.

sqlbox::show uses the fixed ("sqlbox_draft", "label_sql") key, so switching from class A to B overwrites A's in-progress draft. Returning to A then creates a fresh draft instead of restoring the user's text. Include owner in the storage key to keep drafts per class.

Suggested fix

+    let key = egui::Id::new(("sqlbox_draft", slot, owner));

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pending colour picks can commit to a new project's same-id layer.

ColorDrag stores only layer and class. Pressing Mod+N while the pointer is held runs project.new. Mid-drag, the pick stays pending, then apply_color_drag resolves layer in the new project through app.session.map_mut(). It then writes before and runs labels.style on the new project's layer with the same id. For a Default pick, the class lookup always succeeds, so the new project's Default label colour is changed and an undo step is recorded. The pick should instead be discarded or bound to the project and map where it began.

A safe diff is not included. Adding a project and map identity to ColorDrag and guarding apply_color_drag needs the existing project or map identity API, which was not inspected.

Code review

I read the full diff of labelpane.rs (the other two files are small). I did not run the tests or the build. I checked the changes against symbology.rs: Labeling::class, class_mut and label_class_name.

Bugs

No definite bugs found. Edge cases I traced and found handled:

  • Rename box: Escape drops the stored state, and a refused name resets focused so the box keeps focus. A pane that wasn't drawn for a pass ends the rename (r.pass + 1 >= pass). Renaming Default leaves it chosen by no name, and renaming another class re-chooses it by its new name.
  • Chosen class: an undo, a script or the Assistant removing the chosen class makes chosen() fall back to Default.
  • Colour drag: a drag that ends up on a different layer or class is finished first. A class removed mid-pick is skipped safely in apply_color_drag, with no unwrap.
  • Recorded steps: Default is sent without a class parameter, so steps recorded on it are unchanged.

Quality (minor, low confidence)

  • layer_key includes the map's name, so renaming a map silently resets the chosen class and any SQL drafts for its layers. That is harmless, and the comment explains why the name is used, but the name is not a stable key.
  • new_name falls back to unwrap_or_default(), which gives an empty name. This is unreachable in practice, because the range is MAX_LABEL_CLASSES + 2 and New is disabled at the limit. The command would refuse an empty name anyway.
  • at uses an exact == match on the class name, while chosen and Labeling::class ignore ASCII case. c.name always comes from the layer's own names, so this is consistent today, but it would diverge if c.name ever came from elsewhere.
  • The new use line in labelpane.rs is long. cargo fmt should have wrapped it, so check it if CI formatting complains.

Security

Nothing to raise. Class names are trimmed and length-capped by label_class_name before use, and all edits go through the existing commands.

Performance

Nothing significant. extras(l) and count iterate at most 64 classes per frame.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic. Fallible lookups use Option and early returns.
  • New UI strings are wrapped in tl! or i18n::fmt. Catalog entries aren't required in the PR.
  • The change stays in L6 and goes through labels.* commands. No layering or wasm concerns.
  • The PR lists new tests and says cargo xtask ci passes.

Code review

I reviewed the crates/ui-egui/src/labelpane.rs changes in the diff. I paged through only the first 600 lines of diff.patch, so I didn't read the end of the diff or the docs/user-guide/cartography.md and ribbon.rs changes. I didn't build or run anything. The pane now edits one label class at a time, with New, Rename, Move, Remove and Visible controls.

Bugs

  • Rename box lifetime (low confidence). The check r.pass + 1 >= pass assumes cumulative_pass_nr goes up by at most one between shows. Extra egui passes could silently drop a rename in progress. Inline comment posted.

Security

  • Nothing found. The new strings go into command parameters only, and the commands validate them.

Performance

  • Nothing notable. Per-frame work is small and bounded by MAX_LABEL_CLASSES.

Quality

  • new_name fallback (nit, low confidence). unwrap_or_default() can return an empty name. That is unreachable while New is disabled at the class cap. Inline comment posted.
  • The Class struct and the named and class_mut helpers keep Default-versus-named handling in one place. Recorded steps for Default stay unchanged because no class param is sent.
  • I traced the colour-drag path (class is part of the pending drag, and a class removed mid-pick is handled) and the stale-choice fallback to Default, and found no bug.

AGENTS.md

  • There is no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in the non-test code I read. The new UI strings go through tl! or i18n::fmt. All changes are in the UI layer (L6), which is allowed to use egui.
  • The renamed-class and Move Up/Down tests are in the diff. I didn't confirm whether the pane has a regression test for the rename-lifetime behaviour.

Code review

I reviewed the whole labelpane.rs change plus the small edits in sqlbox.rs, ribbon.rs and the docs. I did not run the code or the tests, and I read the 600 diff lines I paged through, not the rest of the file. I found nothing I'm confident is a bug. I posted no inline comments, only the notes below.

Bugs

  • Low confidence, rename_box / classes (labelpane.rs): the "stale rename" check is r.pass + 1 >= pass, using cumulative_pass_nr. If egui runs several passes in one frame, such as a repaint after request_discard or a multipass layout, the counter can jump by more than 1 between visible frames. A rename in progress could then be dropped unexpectedly. This is unlikely in practice. Comparing against a frame counter or a last-shown timestamp would be sturdier.
  • Low confidence, rename of Default: the edit box starts with c.it.name, which is the English string "Default", not the translated label shown in the chooser. A user in another language who presses Enter without editing gets no change, which is correct. If they edit the text, they start from English text, which could be surprising.
  • Low confidence, Escape handling in rename_box: Escape is only honoured while edit.has_focus(). The input is read after the widget is added, so this should work. A regression test for "Escape cancels without running a command" would be worth having if the new tests don't already cover it. I didn't verify this.

Security

  • None found. The class names that reach commands come from label_class_name, which sanitises them, and the commands validate their own parameters.

Performance

  • None of note. extras(l).count() and position are O(classes), and the number of classes is capped at MAX_LABEL_CLASSES.

Quality

  • layer_key builds an egui::Id::unique from the map name and the layer id on every call. It is called several times per frame, once from each of classes, sql, chosen_key and others. This is cheap, and the choice of key is well justified in its doc comment.
  • color_drag now takes class: Option<&str>, and ribbon.rs calls it with None, which keeps the ribbon on Default as intended. Silently ignoring a class that has vanished (the else { return }) is reasonable.
  • The run return type changed to Option<Value>. Call sites that ignore it get no #[must_use] warning, which is fine.
  • new_name falls back to unwrap_or_default(), an empty string, if all candidates are taken. It can't happen with the cap in place, and the command would reject an empty name.

AGENTS.md

  • Never crash: I saw no unwrap, expect or panic in the non-test code, and the lookups use get-style access. ✔
  • Translatable text: new labels use tl! and i18n::fmt. One thing to check: tl!(label) is called with a non-literal in the "Move Up" / "Move Down" loop. That matches the existing pattern in this file (tl!(label) for "Out Beyond"), so I assume the catalog extraction handles it.
  • Layering and wasm: the change is UI-only, so there are no new dependencies and nothing that affects the wasm build.
  • Tests: the new behaviours (class chooser, rename, remove, move, per-class colour drag) appear to have tests, and the_sql_tab_says_what_else_decides_the_labels was updated for the new text.

Code review

I found no blocking bugs. I read the diff and the engine commands it calls: labels.class.add, remove, rename, move and update, plus Labeling::class, class_mut and in_order. I did not build the code or run any tests, so I can't confirm the claim in the PR description that cargo xtask ci passes.

Bugs

  • Rename box lifetime (low confidence). labelpane.rs:188 ends a stale rename by comparing cumulative_pass_nr (r.pass + 1 >= pass). If a frame runs an extra pass, the counter can advance by 2 and a live rename box is dropped for no reason. An own frame counter or a "last shown" marker would be sturdier. I posted an inline comment on it.
  • Choice resets when a map is renamed (low confidence, probably intended). layer_key includes the map name, so renaming the map sends the pane back to Default. That is a harmless reset, and the PR documents the keying on purpose.
  • Colour drag after a rename (very low confidence). color_drag finds its class by name. If the class is renamed mid-drag, the preview and the pending drag miss it. apply_color_drag then returns early, so nothing crashes.

Security

  • Nothing found. All new input goes through existing commands, and the class name is trimmed and truncated by label_class_name.

Performance

  • Nothing notable. Each frame makes a few small linear scans over at most 64 classes.

Quality

  • Comment wording. The test comment "Controls added on main keep editing…" looks like a merge leftover and says nothing lasting. Consider rewording it.
  • Saved default names. new_name makes names with i18n::fmt("Class {n}"), so a translated default name is saved in the project. It also depends on the UI language when the pane looks for a free name. This is minor, but a fixed English name would keep project files the same across languages.
  • Return value of run. run now returns Option<Value> and several callers discard it. That is fine, but a let _ or ; would make the ignored value explicit.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, panic or unsafe in non-test code. The new unwraps are all inside #[cfg(test)], which allows them.
  • Interface text. The new text is wrapped in tl! or i18n::fmt. The catalogs don't need updating.
  • Commands. The pane only runs labels.* commands. Default is sent without class, so steps recorded on it are unchanged.
  • Tests. The new tests are thorough: the chosen class, the fall-back to Default, undo, refused names, the class limit and the colour pick.
  • Docs. cartography.md is updated.
