feat(labels): label lines along them, straight or curved, and italic labels - #802
Lines can now be labelled along them, as QGIS's Parallel and Curved line placements and MapLibre's line labels do, and label classes can be italic.
Parallel: the text straight, turned to the line's direction across it.
Curved: each character turned with the line where it bends.
Both sit at the middle of the line's longest part on screen, centred on the line and kept upright (a line drawn right to left reads the same way), and may run past its ends by about a letter. A line too short for its text, or (curved) one bending more than 25° from one character to the next (QGIS's default limit), is left unlabelled rather than drawn mangled. Points and polygons with these placements are labelled as Automatic.
map:LabelPlacement::Parallel and ::Curved (codes parallel, curved), LabelClass::italic (skipped when false, so older projects read as before).
render: new line_labels module places text along a screen polyline: parallel (centre and angle) and curved (each character's centre and angle, refusing a too-sharp bend). Label candidates for lines use them with the class's size (reference scale included).
PlacedLabel::glyphs carries a curved label's characters, each placed and turned relative to the label's centre, so the map view can move the label as a whole.
Drawn character by character in exports (text::draw) and on screen (mapview::draw_label); collides as one square per character, as turned tile labels already do.
turn_with carries the characters into turned and tilted views, and reads the label from its other end when the turn would put it upside down.
ui: Labeling pane: Italic beside Bold, and Position › Along lines (Parallel, Curved) for line layers.
docs:cartography.md › Labeling.
This is a step toward opening QGIS projects whose annotation and line labels use these placements (e.g. swisstopo's SMV25, whose 27 annotation layers are text baselines labelled Parallel or Curved).
Testing
render: line_labels unit tests (middle, angle, upright, overrun, a steady arc, a right angle refused); labels_run_along_lines_straight_or_curved (a parallel label's angle, a curved label's characters in order, a too-sharp bend left out, drawn pixels, one collision square per character); a_curved_label_turned_upside_down_reads_from_its_other_end.
engine: rivers_are_labelled_along_their_lines_in_italics (commands, save/open, export, italic not written when off).
Looked at the Labeling pane and a curved river label on screen and in an export.
cargo fmt, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings, cargo test --workspace, cargo xtask layers pass locally (except two font-dependent rustgis-render text tests that fail on main here too). Not built for wasm locally (no target here); nothing platform-specific is added.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added italic styling for map labels.
Added Parallel and Curved placement options for line labels. Parallel labels stay straight; Curved labels follow the line. Both are centered on the longest visible stretch and may extend slightly beyond its ends.
Labels may be omitted when a line is too short. Curved labels may also be omitted on sharp bends or displayed straight when the text is longer than 200 characters.
Points and polygons using these placement options fall back to automatic placement.
Documentation
Updated the labeling guide with italic styling, placement behavior, and how these options work for points and polygons.
…labels
Two label placements for lines: Parallel sets the text straight, turned
to the line's direction across it; Curved turns each character with the
line where it bends. Both sit at the middle of the line's longest part on
the screen, centred on the line and kept upright, and may run past its
ends by about a letter. A line too short for its text, or one bending
more than 25 degrees from one character to the next (QGIS's default), is
left unlabelled. Points and polygons take them as Automatic. Label
classes can also be italic.
- map: `LabelPlacement::Parallel`/`Curved`, `LabelClass::italic`.
- render: `line_labels` places the text along a screen line;
`PlacedLabel::glyphs` carries a curved label's characters (each placed
and turned about the label's centre), drawn one by one, colliding as a
square each, and turned with the view (`turn_with`, read from the other
end when upside down).
- ui: each glyph turned on screen; Italic and Position › Along lines in
the Labeling pane.
- engine: `labels.placement` "parallel"/"curved", `labels.style` italic.
- docs: cartography.md › Labeling.

Walkthrough
The change adds italic label styling and Parallel and Curved placement options. The renderer calculates placement along visible line parts and draws curved labels as individually positioned glyphs. The UI and user guide expose and describe the new settings.
The label model and command support italic styling and Parallel and Curved placement values. The UI exposes the settings. Tests cover saving and reopening label settings, and the guide describes placement behavior. The renderer adds the unicode-segmentation dependency.
Line placement geometry crates/render/src/line_labels.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs
The renderer clips line parts to the view and selects the longest visible part. Geometry helpers calculate parallel label positions and angles, or per-character positions and angles for curved labels.
Glyph rendering and label behavior crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/text.rs, crates/render/src/tiles.rs, crates/render/src/stream_tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs
Placed labels carry per-character glyph data. Rendering uses each glyph’s offset and angle. Turning and collision handling account for curved labels, and label constructors initialize glyph data.

Bugs
None confirmed. I checked these and they look correct:
the upside-down flip in turn_with
Path::at clamping
the 25° turn limit
serde backward compatibility for italic, which is skipped when false
Performance
Unbounded curved-label text (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3023, medium confidence). Curved labels allocate a String per character and measure each one for every candidate, before collision culling. label_boxes caps at 500 glyphs, but text::draw and draw_label don't, and they clone a PlacedLabel per character. Cap the character count.
Quality
Misplaced doc comment (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3694, high confidence). longest_on_screen was inserted between turn_with's doc comment and turn_with. turn_with loses its doc, and longest_on_screen gets two stacked doc blocks.
Minor width errors (low confidence). Parallel measures width ignoring italic. Curved sums per-character advances, which drops kerning. Both can make the label width slightly off.
Wrong glyph widths after a flip (low confidence). When a curved label is flipped upside down, the texts are swapped between glyph slots. Slots keep their original positions, so characters of different widths can sit slightly off.
Security
Nothing found.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, panic or unsafe in non-test code. get() and checked_sub are used, and non-finite values are guarded.
The UI text is wrapped in tl!.
The new command parameters are documented, and the docs are updated.
The Parallel/Curved placements are exposed to the hostile-params test through the existing position parameter.

Apply the visibility check to along-line placement.
If a long line crosses the view but g.label_point() lies outside ctx.cull, Line 2970 skips the feature before Parallel or Curved can select its visible segment. Such a line remains unlabelled despite having room for text on screen. For along-line placement, select visible line geometry before rejecting the candidate by position. Keep the existing label-point check for other placements.

Review follow-ups for labels along lines:
- A line labelled along it is no longer skipped when its label point is
out of view: the label sits on the longest stretch in view, each part
cut at the view's edges and where it goes out of sight.
- Curved labels are cut into grapheme clusters (unicode-segmentation), so
a combining accent stays on its letter.
- A text over 200 characters is set straight rather than curved, so
drawing and collision boxes stay bounded.
- A curved label turned upside down places each character by its own
width.
- turn_with gets its doc comment back.
Thanks for the reviews, all addressed in ad7d8d4. On the outside-diff note (lib.rs:2970, the label-point check): for a line with a Parallel or Curved class, a feature whose label point is out of view is now kept when its extent meets the view. Only those along-line classes label it, on the stretch in view, and the other classes still need the label point in view. a_line_mostly_off_screen_is_labelled_along_its_stretch_in_view covers a river whose middle is far off screen.
This PR adds Parallel and Curved label placement along lines and an Italic option for label text. I read the diff and some surrounding code but did not build or run anything. I found no crash risks and no AGENTS.md violations.
Bugs
crates/render/src/lib.rs:2985 (low-medium confidence): for a line whose label point is off screen, ctx.screen(c) can return None, and the continue skips the line even though its in-view stretch could be labelled. This can happen on the globe or at projection limits. I posted an inline comment.
Quality
crates/render/src/lib.rs:3036 (low confidence): label widths are measured with class.bold only, not class.italic. If the italic face has different advances, the fit test and the character spacing will be slightly off. I posted an inline comment.
Security
Nothing found. Text length is capped (MAX_CURVED_CHARS is 200, and collision boxes are limited to 500). Non-finite values are filtered in Path::new, clip and in_view.
Performance
Nothing significant. The longest in-view stretch is computed at most once per feature, and only for classes that ask for it.
AGENTS.md
No violations seen. The changed code has no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe outside tests. New UI strings use tl!. The new dependency has Cargo.lock and THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt updates. Docs and tests are included.
Not checked: the unicode-segmentation licence against deny.toml, and the wasm32 build.

…ition
A line labelled along it is no longer skipped when its label point is
behind the globe or past the projection's limits: only the classes that
need the point wait for it, and those along the line take its stretch in
view. The check for a line in view uses the layer's cached extents.
I reviewed this from the diff and the surrounding source. I could not build or run anything. The change adds Parallel and Curved label placement along lines, an italic label option, and a new line_labels.rs. It is generally careful: it avoids unwrap and panics, uses get(), caps curved text at 200 graphemes, and has tests. The findings below are mostly minor.
Bugs
Halo overpaint on curved labels (medium confidence). Each character is drawn as a full label, halo then text (crates/render/src/text.rs:446, and draw_label in ui-egui/src/mapview.rs). Each character's halo is painted over the previous character's text, so with halos on, neighbouring letters get clipped. Drawing all halos first and then all glyph text would avoid this.
No fix needed for read_back. I checked the upside-down swap and its test and found no problem.
Security
No issues found. Input is bounded: character count is capped, non-finite coordinates are filtered, and label_boxes takes at most 500 glyphs.
Performance
Off-screen lines now enter the label loop (low–medium confidence). A line whose label point is off screen is now checked against the view, and every vertex of every part is projected (crates/render/src/lib.rs:2971 and the longest_on_screen call site). On large, dense line layers this adds per-frame cost. Clipping parts by their own extent before projecting would help.
One offscreen picture per character (medium confidence).draw_turned renders one for each character, up to 200 per label.
Quality
Duplicated match (low confidence). The Parallel | Curved match appears in both along_line and any_along. A LabelPlacement::is_along_line() helper would remove the duplication.
Italic labels are measured without the italic face (low confidence).text::measure and block_width take only bold. Italic widths may differ slightly from non-italic ones, which could leave small spacing errors on curved labels.
AGENTS.md
Adherence looks good.tl! is used for the new UI strings (Italic, Along lines), and the new dependency is recorded in the lockfile and the THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt file.
To confirm. Make sure cargo deny check licenses accepts unicode-segmentation. It is Apache-2.0/MIT, so it should.
To confirm. Check that hostile_params_never_panic covers the new position values and italic.

I've posted two inline comments and I'm writing the summary now.
Code review
I found no crashes or correctness failures in the new line-label code (line_labels.rs, the render_frame changes, turn_with/read_back). I read the PR diff and line_labels.rs, and checked the labelpane.rs and ribbon.rs placement UI against the new enum variants. I did not run the tests or the app.
Bugs
Vertical lines read in an arbitrary direction (low–medium confidence).upright() in crates/render/src/line_labels.rs:139 flips a line only when b.0 < a.0. For a near-vertical line that comparison is decided by float noise or by how the line was digitised, so one north–south river can read top-to-bottom and the next bottom-to-top. A tie-break (vertical text reads bottom-to-top) would fix it. This is on the new line-label placement, an inline comment is posted.
Minor, not posted:text::measure is called per grapheme with no italic argument. Curved-label advances therefore ignore italic metrics and kerning between characters, so italic curved text may be spaced slightly off.
Performance
Quadratic cloning when drawing curved labels (medium confidence). In crates/render/src/text.rs:927-935, ..l.clone() copies the full glyphs Vec (up to 200 Strings) for every glyph and every ink pass, then discards it. That is about 80k String clones per 200-character label with a halo, each frame. mapview.rs::draw_label has the same pattern, and draw_turned clones the label again. Build one base label with glyphs emptied outside the loops, or pass the fields explicitly. An inline comment is posted.
Minor:longest_on_screen projects every vertex of every in-view line part. That is acceptable because it is computed once per feature and gated by an extent check, but it is worth watching on layers with very dense lines.
Security
Nothing found. The new code takes no external input beyond attribute text and map geometry. Text length is capped (MAX_CURVED_CHARS, 200), and label_boxes takes at most 500 glyphs.
Quality
No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code; get() and Option are used throughout. NaN handling is thorough, and the new tests cover the edge cases well.
The pr-context hostile-parameter test gains a position: "curved" case. The italic field is skipped when false in the saved project, so old projects load unchanged and the new test checks this.
AGENTS.md
UI text: new labels are wrapped in tl! ("Italic", "Along lines"). Catalog entries aren't required.
Dependencies:unicode-segmentation is new, and Cargo.lock and THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt are updated. I could not confirm that deny.toml allows its licence or that cargo xtask notices output matches. CI should confirm both.
wasm: nothing in the diff conflicts with the wasm build (no std::time, no file access).
Change size
The whole PR against main (merge base 24eba9b to PR head b4225f6).
The PR adds Parallel and Curved label placement along lines, plus an italic option on label classes. I read the full diff and found no correctness bugs. I didn't build or run anything, so the only checks are reading the code and the tests it adds. The two inline comments are about performance and maintainability.
Bugs
None found. I checked these:
The line clipping and in_view splitting.
The Path::at indexing.
The MAX_TURN angle wrap.
The upright flip.
The read_back logic for a map turned upside down.
The point.is_none() handling for lines whose label point is off screen.
The globe case, where near returns true for every part.
Security
None found. Hostile input is handled: non-finite points are filtered, the character count is capped at 200, and label_boxes takes at most 500 glyphs. There is no new unwrap, expect or unsafe outside tests.
Performance
Medium confidence: text::draw and draw_label build a new Pixmap and do a bilinear draw for every glyph, once per ink pass (halo, then text). A 200-character label with a halo costs up to 400 small pixmap allocations per frame. A lower cap or a translate-only fast path would bound this (inline comment on text.rs).
Low confidence: on the globe, longest_on_screen projects every point of every part of each line, because the extent cull is skipped. This only matters for very large line layers.
Quality
Low confidence: read_back re-measures the glyph advances instead of storing them on LabelGlyph. This is consistent today but could drift if measure changes (inline comment on lib.rs).
Low confidence: upright picks the reading direction from the chord between the two ends of the text. A strongly U-shaped curved label could therefore have glyphs at different orientations. The 25° turn limit mostly prevents this.
AGENTS.md
Followed:
Interface text goes through tl! ("Italic", "Along lines").
unicode-segmentation is added with Cargo.lock and THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt updated.
hostile_params_never_panic gets a junk-parameter case.
The docs are updated.
There is a round-trip test with a PNG export.
Could not verify: that cargo xtask ci passes, that deny.toml allows the new dependency's licence, or that the wasm build works, since there was no Bash tool. unicode-segmentation is pure Rust and should be fine for wasm.

Summary
Lines can now be labelled along them, as QGIS's Parallel and Curved line placements and MapLibre's line labels do, and label classes can be italic.
